TOPPING the list of Saudi Arabia’s diversified businesses Is Saad Group, established in1980 and today ranked as one of the top ten companies nationwide and in the top 25 in the Gulf region.
Chairman Maan A.Al-Sanea, one of the most respected entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia for his business acumen and his philanthropic endeavors, has invested the last two decades in creating a dynamic group of 37 companies that have come to represent excellence and progress in the Kingdom. Saad’s flagship company, Saad Trading & Contracting, was originally formed to carry out infrastructure projects in the western province in the early eighties.
Diversification began at the end of the decade and throughout the early part of the 1990s when the Group formed the Saad Tourism and Travel Company to accommodate its expatriate workforce.
They established an IT company to improve vertical integration and ventured into property development as a result of a growing land bank portfolio. Saad Investments Company Limited (SICL), part of the Group’s financial arm, was also formed at this time and as a result of the Gulf crisis in 1990.SICL took over the management of the Group’s offshore assets from Saad Securities Company, which was based in Bahrain and had been responsible for the Group’s finances since its inception in 1984.
Around this time Mr. Al-Sanea began to pursue issues closer to his heart and started a process that would ultimately end up defining his Group – benefic involvement. Following the loss of his eldest son in 1989, Mr. Al-Sanea set about establishing the Saad Al Sanea Centre for Communication Disorders. Afree educational center for children who suffer from speech and hearing disabilities, the center today has a capacity to accommodate 600 children as well as 200 teachers and instructors. Once the center was up and running, it soon became clear that the children needed more than just education.
