Experts Urge Diabetes-related Vision Screening

Experts on retinal eye surgery have called for countrywide screening to help diagnose eye diseases brought on by .

A meeting of some of the world’s leading experts said that economic benefits of vision screening are manifold and the procedure should be introduced in the UAE.

“The economic benefits of vision screening are clear and we would welcome and encourage a diabetic eye disease screening programme in the UAE,” said Dr Chris Canning, Medical Director of Eye Hospital Dubai, which is supporting the National Diabetes Campaign.

“The incidence of diabetes in the UAE is one of the highest in the world, but eye disease – a common and potentially serious complication of diabetes – is not yet well understood by patients,” he said.

The meeting – ‘Retinal Masterclass’ – organized by Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai and hosted by the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi discussed the latest surgical techniques in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy (eye disease).

“Screening for inherited disease is needed in the UAE but, of course, it takes time to create the infrastructure and train staff,” said Professor Alan Bird, Emeritus, Professor of Medical Ophthalmology and Honorary Consultant Moorfields Eye Hospital while speaking on the sidelines of the
meeting.

“Diabetic patient education is another important area to consider because of the high incidence of the disease here,” said Dr Adil Mousawi, a senior consultant with a private practice in Abu Dhabi.
