Prince Hussein Ben Abdullah II Academy for Civil Protection (PHA), located 30 kilometres south of the capital, is the first such academy in the Middle East and North Africa, according to the Civil Defence Department (CDD).
According to CDD Spokesman Colonel Farid Shara, the academy offers rare specializations in the fields of civil defence and protection, programmes he said are distinguished in their objectives, quality and practical applications.
“The academy is the first of its kind in the region and the Middle East; it offers bachelor’s degrees in three majors: fire and safety engineering, disaster management and paramedics,” Shara told The Jordan Times in a recent interview.
He added that the academy is dedicated to providing civil defence officers with the knowledge, skills and professionalism needed to offer high-quality emergency services in accordance with the “highest international standards in these fields”.
To hone its graduates’ practical skills, the academy offers training courses in such areas as fire fighting, fire safety, rescue and hazardous materials, among others.
“The intense training in firefighting, emergency medical services and rescue functions and techniques is used to expand the students’ knowledge and readiness to respond,” Shara explained.
The CDD spokesman also noted that to add value to the training offered, PHA offers a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities and training stimulator.
