SEHA Announces An Important Six Sigma Workshop

Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, better known as SEHA, announced today a Six Sigma Workshop held between 17th to 21st December 2009 in Abu Dhabi at the Intercontinental Hotel.  The goal of the event is to introduce the Six Sigma concepts to SEHA management and further increase awareness amongst SEHA facilities about the benefits of using Six Sigma  to help mitigate and solve related customer service issues which can negatively impact the patient journey.

Six Sigma stands for Six Standard Deviations (Sigma is the Greek letter used to represent standard deviation in statistics) from mean. Six Sigma methodology provides the techniques and tools to improve the capability and reduce the defects in any process.

Six Sigma was developed at Motorola, the electronics giant, in its manufacturing division, where millions of parts are made using the same repetitive process. Eventually the problem solving discipline of Six Sigma evolved.  It was then applied to other non manufacturing processes. Today Six Sigma is applied by forward thinking companies to many fields such as Services, Medical and Insurance Procedures, Call Centers.

Mr. Carl Vincent Stanifer, the CEO of SEHA commented, “This event is part of a continuing drive by SEHA to ensure and emphasize its commitment to Quality Improvement in its healthcare facilities. The patient journey has multiple points of opportunity to positively impact the patient along the way.  We need to identify those opportunities and capitalize on them. Six Sigma offers a disciplined approach to identifying those opportunities for quality improvement.  ”

Dr. Ali Abdulkarim Al Obaidli, Chief Clinical Officer for SEHA and Chair of the Organizing Committee emphasized,”Six Sigma has many applications in to optimize the efficiency.  In my opinion it has provided similar organizations with process improvement opportunities that deliver measurable results and improved the quality, service, outcomes for the patient and even reduced costs in the .

Dr. Shakil Ahmad, Sr. Clinical Quality Specialist for SEHA and coordinator for the event said,  Mr. Muhanad Hirzallah, an International Expert in Six Sigma will be facilitating the two training workshops. The first workshop is designed for Management of SEHA Corporate and all SEHA healthcare facilities. It will give them an overview on how we can optimize Six Sigma team performance in making breakthroughs in patient care. In the second workshop a multidisciplinary team from each SEHA healthcare facility will use Six Sigma tools to address processes their Management team would like to address in their respective facility.  For example, they might look at the patient discharge process, procurement or patient waiting time and so forth”.

Hi there, great to see Six Sigma and hopefully Lean quality being implemented. I am based in Bahrain and doing a doctorate in health in the UK. Could anyone advise me which hospitals have implemented Six Sigma or Lean quality systems in the Middle East. I am keen to work with them on my doctorate thesis.
