Warning on Herbal Diet Capsule Use

The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) has warned the public against using a herbal medicine — Quick Acting Slimming Capsule — manufactured by a Lebanon-based company, specializing in herbal products.

The warning has been issued in view of the health hazards posed by the product. The capsule contains sibutramine, a medication for weight loss that can be used only on a doctor’s prescription, SCH sources told this newspaper yesterday.

The capsule is not registered with the SCH and is not allowed to be sold in the country. However, some people are bringing it into the country for personal use.

“We conducted laboratory tests on the product after complaints from some people about its side effects. Although the medicine is not allowed to be sold in the country, people are getting it from outside,” said the sources.

Experts point out that several companies are trying to sell their fake products, cashing in on the high demand for weight loss medicines in the region.

Prevalence of obesity in Gulf countries, including Qatar is one of the highest in the world.

A recent survey conducted in Qatar showed that about 40 percent of Qatari children are obese.

“They are sold across the counter, without a doctor’s prescription. Many people buy and use them without knowing the source or the authenticity of the product,” said Nakhleh.

“They are in fact counterfeit products. If they claim to be natural they should not use chemical ingredients,” he added.
