World Leading Eye Experts to Lead Unique ‘Retinal Masterclass’

Some of the world’s leading experts on the retina – a part of the eye which is central to the transfer of images to the brai – will gather in Abu Dhabi in December for a unique masterclass for retinal surgeons from across the region, from the public and private sectors. More than 50 eye care specialists are expected to attend the two-day event, which will be held at the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) in Abu Dhabi, on 10th – 11th December 2009. The Moorfields Retinal Masterclass is an accredited CME (Continuing Medical Education) event.

The Retinal Masterclass will be led by three visiting experts from Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and the Medical Director from Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, which is organizing the event in conjunction with part-sponsor, Novartis. The team of speakers includes:

*Prof. Alan Bird, Emeritus Professor of Medical Ophthalmology, Honorary Consultant Moorfields Eye Hospital Dr. Bill Aylward, Medical Director, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London Dr. Alistair Laidlaw, Head of Vitreoretinal Department, St Thomas Hospital, London Dr. Chris Canning, Medical Director, Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai.

Speaking about the Moorfields Retinal Masterclass, Dr Chris Canning, Medical Director at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, commented: “We are delighted to be able to bring together world class speakers for the first Moorfields Retinal Masterclass, for a group of the leading retinal surgeons from the UAE and the GCC region, to discuss one of the most complex areas of the eye. The Retinal Masterclass will be hosted at the Imperial College London Diabetes Center in Abu Dhabi, reflecting the importance of diabetes in our agenda, as you would expect in this region. The event is part of the commitment of Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai to conduct research, teaching, and the treatment of eye conditions in the Middle East.”

The Retina is a light sensitive layer that lines the interior of the eye and can be compared to the film in a camera, transmitting images through the optic nerve to the brain. It is composed of millions of light sensitive, specialized cells known as rods and cones, which work together to transform the image into electrical energy and this is sent to the optic disk on the retina and transferred via electrical impulses along the optic nerve to be processed by the brain. The human eye contains about 125 million rods, which are necessary for seeing in dim light. Cones on the other hand function best in bright light – there are between 6 and 7 million in the eye – they are essential for receiving a sharp accurate image; cones can also distinguish colours.

I recently bought 3d eye glasses and I would like to know if they affect people’s eye vision if they wear them on a daily basis. I am really curious about it, but every website I check to find something about it never has an answer. I figured if i contacted an eye expert I could finally get an answer.
