Raising Vision Care Awareness

Dubai (Moorfields) and Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC) are proud to present ‘Sense of Sight’, an exhibition of photography by eight aspiring photographers who live and work in the UAE.  The show, which runs from 3rd – 24th February is the culmination of months of work by these talented photographers.

The photographs that make up this arresting exhibition will aim to highlight the importance of Moorfields’ work by portraying the effects of visual disturbance, either psychologically or through some form of visual impairment.  The photographs will be judged by a panel of experts, who will award one of the gifted photographers a prize of AED 10,000.

Moorfields and DUCTAC chose to work together on this project in order to support and creatively challenge local artistic talent and to promote the importance of regular eye screening.  Many of the vision related problems depicted in the exhibition regularly go undetected and visual art is the perfect medium to raise awareness of these impairments. Dr Chris Canning, CEO and Medical Director of Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, said:

“Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai is delighted to be sponsoring this art event organized by DUCTAC. The theme is inspiring – seeing the world through the eyes of people with eye conditions and visual impairments. Common eye conditions and diseases people suffer from include short sightedness, long sightedness, macular degeneration, glaucoma (spots), migraines (flashing lights), cataracts (blurred vision) and double vision (shadow). The artists have taken these eye conditions and interpreted them into images, using anything that inspired them and the results will be incredibly interesting both from an artistic and medical perspective, helping to raise awareness within the community of the importance of regular vision screening.”

The artists taking part in the exhibition are Karen Dias, Zarina Fernandes, Hind Mezaina, Jalal Abuthina, Kahlil De Pio, Kamil Roxas, Omar Ibrahim and Altamash Urooj. Each of the photographers has visited Moorfields, which is the first hospital of its kind in Dubai, to gain a better understanding of the 200-year heritage of the organization and the important work that they do.
