A team of health experts working out key specifications of the federal anti-tobacco law will also calculate minor details such as the safe distance between a smoking room and other occupied rooms in the building, said a senior ministry of health official.
A National Tobacco Control team is currently being formed to overlook the detailing of the recently passed federal anti-tobacco law, said Dr Wedad Al Maidoor, Head of the National Tobacco Control Committee at the Ministry of Health.
Among other details that the team will work on include how to implement the regulations regarding smoking in a car with children under 12 as well as the appropriate distance between a shisha cafe and a residential area among several other minor details.
she said, explaining that the committee would draw up an appendix draft to the law before circulating the details among those involved in the implementation process.
As per the law, shisha cafes have been given a year’s time to move out from residential areas so as to protect people from second hand smoke. Failure to comply with the law could invite a fine of up to Dh1 million and even jail term.
