Health Experts Call for Unified Diabetes Strategy in Jordan

Health experts called for a unified strategy to address diabetes ahead of an international conference on the disease.

Mohammad Zaheri, head of the Jordanian Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism said that no serious efforts have yet been adopted in the Kingdom to curb the prevalence of diabetes.

“There is an urgent need to come up with a national strategy for the prevention of diabetes, which is a burden that needs to be addressed,” Zaheri said in a press conference yesterday to announce the Third Congress of the Jordanian Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, which is set to open on May 3.

The conference will tackle issues related to and prevention, according to the society.

Abdelkarim Khawaldeh, senior consultant endocrinologist and conference president, said that the prevalence of diabetes in the Kingdom is “high” compared to other Arab countries due to unhealthy lifestyles, obesity and other factors.

According to the recently released International Diabetes Federation 2009 report, had the ninth-highest prevalence of diabetes in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The prevalence of diabetes in the Kingdom stood at 10.1 per cent last year, with 1,078 deaths related to complications caused by the disease recorded in the 20-79 age bracket, the report revealed.
