The Tobacco Control Unit under the Supreme Council of Health registered an increasing number of violations as part of its campaign against those violating the anti-tobacco law in Qatar.
The SCH has imposed fines amounting to a total of QR74,000 on smokers endangering public health, during inspections conducted in several shopping centres across the city since the launch of the campaign on March 18, according to Dr Anoud bint Mohammed Al Thani acting manager, Health Promotion and Non communicable diseases at SCH.
Around 302 violations were registered during 94 routine inspection visits since the launch of the campaign.
Two inspectors from the unit at SCH have been given judicial powers. Prior to this, they fines were levied by the police.
