Qatar Records Increasing in Number of kidney Transplants

has seen an increased number of renal transplants amounting up to the number of procedures done in 2008 and 2009 taken together over the last three months.

Dr Riadh Fadhil, Senior Consultant at the Department of Surgery/Urology, , said “This year we have witnessed an unprecedented increase in kidney transplants. In 2008 only three procedures were done and last year, two. In the first three months of 2010 we have done five transplants and three more procedures will be done by May.”

However, a record number of procedures will be done in the first half of this year alone. Kidney transplants started in Qatar in 1986 and 157 procedures have been done so far. Every year in Qatar, 150 new kidney failure cases per million populations is diagnosed, adding 225 patients annually.

“Also, the number of deceased-donation consent has gone up from less than five over the last two years. We are currently working on ‘The Doha Donation Accord’, that will ensure that all in Qatar has equal rights and accessibility in relation to organ transplants, and that the appropriate care and legal security is given to live donors. Each person in Qatar has the right to receive an organ donation; like wise they are also obliged to give back to the community, at least at death.”

Qatar’s has state-of-the-art facilities for kidney transplant and the out-comes of the procedures are comparable to international standards. The whole donation and transplant procedure is free in Qatar and more over all the facilities for ‘related-donors’ coming from abroad are also done.

The patients who have undergone transplants here had a hospital- stay of only one to three weeks and were back to their works in less than a month. The donors also had less than one week stay and with laproscopic procedure; it is decreased to one day.
