Jordan Became a regional pioneer in mental health services’

21-6-2010-2Despite the fact that around 10-25% of population in Jordan “suffer from psychological problems”. As part of primary healthcare services, Jordan has become a regional pioneer in psychological care. “The ministry has established a unit to provide care for mental health patients as part of primary healthcare.” Bassam Hijjawi, director of the ministry’s primary healthcare directorate said. “The goal for establishing this unit is to broaden services provided to mental health patients,” adding “The unit aims to reach out to patients who are deterred from going to specialized mental health centers due to social stigmas.”

Nayef Fayez, Minister of Health, said “linking mental health with human rights has become an important component of community development.” He added. “Jordan has developed legislation to guarantee the rights of mental health patients and has formed a national committee comprising representatives from the public and private health sector to draft policies and strategies to develop mental health services in the Kingdom.” The minister announced that the ministry is holding workshops to draft a “mental healthcare law”, as well as monitoring mechanisms to ensure that mental health patients are treated in accordance with human rights and protected from inhumane treatment.
