Breast Cancer Screening in QatarYesterday, at the Supreme Council Health workshop(SHC) was conducted by Dr. Salha Bu Jassoun, a senior Oncology Consultant from Al-Amal Hospital. The consultant performed a session on the screening   .In 2008, Breast cancer screening started. Starting from that year, the number of females in this country underwent screening, between the ages of 40-69, became 67,000.In an interview with the peninsula Dr.Bu Jassoun mentioned that “The biggest problem we face is low turnout for screening.  The reasons for the low turnout are a combination of lack of awareness and  ninadequate access to facilities.” She also reported “In 2008 we only had 700 women who took part in the screening program and in 2009 it dropped to 400.  Screening programmes are meant to be community-based so it is easy for women to access the services.  In addition, many women in this culture are afraid to be screened.” In fact  Breast tumors are mostly begin in nature, up to 90%. Based on the age of the involved person, breast self examinations for women at the age of twenty and older are carried out on a monthly basis, mammograms for women at the age of 40 and older, and clinical breast exams by a doctor or his assistant or nurse every 3 years for females between 20-40 years  and after the age of 40.

Qatar discussed with western countries its concerns about the diagnostic rate for breast cancer  and the average of diagnostic interval is 2 weeks versus 6 weeks in many western countries.
