Advisory CouncilOn Monday, the that seeks to eliminate government control over pricing of medicines and liberalize their imports was approved by the . During the last October, the Cabinet had approved the draft law and forwarded it to the Advisory Council seeking its recommendations. The draft law was approved during the Council meeting, chaired by Speaker Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khulaifi through a majority vote.

Services and Public Buildings Committee had received the draft law by The Advisory Council for detailed study. The Minister of Health, HE Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani, and senior officials from the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) were present in three meetings held by The Committee. This draft law suggests ending the monopoly on imports of medicines and opening up the market to competition.

Many companies will be able to operate in the market, and they will be under strict control by the SCH. It’s expected that prices of pharmaceutical products will fall with enactment of the suggested law. Moreover, this law aims to address the shortage in some medicines in the country by liberalizing imports. Abdussalam Al Aji said to Al Sharq “This law represents a good step which will affect the market positively. I hope other sectors will also be organized in such a way, especially food stuff and cars”.
