HIV Spreading is Limited in the Middle East and North Africa

DohaLaith Abu-Raddad, Ph.D., assistant professor of public health in said that the Middle East and North Africa are the lowest areas in spreading. “We now have a comprehensive view of the status of the epidemic across different population groups and the various countries of the region” Abu-Raddad said. A seven-year study led by Abu-Raddad and published last year provides the information about the rate of transmission of HIV/AIDS in the MENA region. This published report was titled “Time for Strategic Action” and was released by the World Bank in collaboration with UNAIDS and the World Health Organization.

Abu-Raddad added “While HIV transmission is limited in the general MENA population, substantial epidemics have emerged in certain high-risk groups: injecting drug users (IDUs), men who have sex with men (MSM), and, to a lesser extent, female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients. Based on the research, policy efforts in MENA should focus HIV response among risk groups, rather than the general population where spread of the disease is very limited”. He finally concluded “Because the epidemic is just beginning in the high risk groups, there is still a window of opportunity to address it before it grows steeply”.
