Calls for Anti-Tobacco Campaigns in UAE Schools

DHAA serious call to apply campaigns in schools has been stressed by Health Authority () after a study showing that smoking habit starts at 10 years of age in many cases. As a result of this study, comparing to non-smokers who are better qualified, smokers are not well educated. There were detailed face-to-face interviews between surveyors and randomly selected adults aged 18 or above to identify smoking prevalence and risk factors range.

“In terms of tobacco use and exposure, we have collated and analyzed critical data on smoking patterns including the percentage of the population who are smokers, the break-up according to age and sex of smokers, their exposure to passive smoking as well as analysis of the places where they are most susceptible to passive smoking” said Laila Al Jasmi, CEO of Health Policy and Strategy Sector at the DHA.

A ‘Quit and Win’ campaign has been applied by DHA and the Heath Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD), as WAM reported. According to this program, 125 smokers will get help to stop smoking. It was announced by Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (Emarat) that starting from today, no more cigarettes and other tobacco products are going to be sold in any of its several stores.
