Medical Awareness Campaign Starts in Dammam to Fight Hepatitis C Virus

DammamIncreasing number of patients in the Kingdom with is leading to more worries in the medical fraternity. Dr. Mona Ismail, an internal medicine and liver consultant at the University of , expressed her concern about the situation. Around 200 million people are infected with the virus across the world. She explained that about 1 % of the Kingdom’s population suffers from this dangerous disease. King Fahd Educational Hospital in Al- Khobar released this study covering the last five years. “The hospital and the faculty of medicine at Dammam University have launched an intensive medical awareness campaign to enlighten the public about the causes and preventive measures” said Dr. Mona.

Important factors such as transmission and the hereditary and genetic factors which cause the spread of the disease are involved in the campaign. Dr. Mona mentioned those comments during a scientific meeting held by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rebesh, President of Dammam University, which included Dr. Yousif Al-Jandan, President of King Faisal University and Dr. Hussein Al-Ferahi, President of Yamamah University. She added “The campaign will take some time to be effective, but said it was crucial in helping to curb the spread of the virus. The disease is commonly transmitted through blood transfusions; use of contaminated surgical tools and during teeth extractions”.
