Prices of Drugs will be Cheaper Soon in UAE

DubaiThe Ministry of Health in has finally convinced manufacturers to bring down drug prices, a decision that will make thousands of patients suffering from more comfortable. Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Health revealed during the announcement said “The drugs will now be ‘reasonably priced’. The ministry has negotiated with 20 international drug manufacturers to bring down prices”. Some sources said “Many of the international drug manufacturers are based in Dubai and the negotiations went on for months”.

The reduction of the CIF (cost, insurance, freight) was the critical problem, as about 75% of the drugs on the shelves of the pharmacies are imported into the country. Patients suffer from lifestyle diseases represent about 20% of the UAE population. Some of these diseases are diabetes, obesity, hypertension and other heart related complications. Also, many patients are not covered by health insurance in Dubai and other emirates so they can’t buy expensive drugs to cut down cholesterol, for example, which leads to heart attacks.

Dr Ameen Al Amiri, Chief Executive Officer for Medical Practice and Licensing at the Ministry added “This will now make drug prices the second-lowest in the region. The drop in prices will help poor patients who cannot afford (the expensive) treatment. Very soon the price of generic drugs manufactured in the UAE and other Arab countries will also be reduced”.
