The Average of Road Accidents Deaths in Oman is Still Increasing

OmanIn the first four months of 2011 the overall number of road accident-related deaths and injuries in reached 12%, in spite of the fact that the number was 14.6% in the first five months of the year. Due to statistics, from January 1-March 31, 2011 2,499 accidents occurred across the country. The ROP official commented “They claimed 302 lives and injured 3,868 people as compared to the same period in 2010, in which 2,445 accidents took place, claiming 269 lives and injuring 3,195”.

The ROP asked drivers to decrease their speed while approaching pedestrian crossings and to follow traffic rules so that pedestrians can cross safely. Also, Taxi drivers have been urged to drop passengers only at pedestrian crossings and school bus drivers asked to ensure that all students have left the bus before they proceed. Pedestrians who cross carelessly will be fined and their ID cards will be confiscated. Furthermore, drivers who break traffic rules at pedestrian crossings will be punished.
