A Noticeable Increase in Medicines Prices this Year across UAE

BMIResidents of spent last year about Dh690 per individual for medications, and this rate will increase this year although the Ministry of Health starts to decrease medicines prices. The prices of 565 drugs have been decreased, most of them for chronic and lifestyle diseases like diabetes, obesity and hypertension. This decrease varied between 5 to 60% following intense negotiations between Ministry of Health and international drug manufacturers.

Business Monitor International revealed “ expects that most of the value development will be realized in the prescription sector, boosted by rising population numbers and a changing diseases profile. In particular, the country is tackling an obesity and diabetes epidemic, which will also require long-term treatment of related conditions, such as increased blood pressure. The recently-established single market of the six GCC states will also facilitate the placement of foreign products in the region”.

BMI explained that the prices of 177 medicines are much higher in UAE than the other countries in the region. Last year, Dh5.71 billion was spent on medicines by 8.26 million residents. This rate is expected to be raised this year by 7.3% to reach Dh6.13 billion.
