Hepatitis C Patients in Egypt are Now Allowed to Choose their Treatment

NHIAThe Ministry of Health’s initiative to grant patients the right to choose between the US, Swiss and local interferon treatment dispensed by the National Health Insurance Authority () was agreed by the Egyptian Society for Liver, Digestive and Tropical Diseases. Latest efforts and medical developments to treat hepatitis C, ‘s largest health burden were discussed in the Society’s 16th annual meeting held in throughout 7-9 July.

Dr Mohamed El Ateek, Secretary of the Arab Association of Liver Physicians, and Director of the Liver Research Center in Tanta, said “We urge the NHIA to immediately implement the Ministry’s positive decision awarding patients the right to choose between global and local hepatitis C treatments. The real solution to curbing liver cancer, currently rising at alarming rates in Egypt, is to effectively address hepatitis C by raising awareness and providing access to the best available treatments”.

Furthermore, a new hope for hepatitis C patients was presented in the meeting by the US FDA’s approval of Telaprevir and Boceprevir. Dr Hisham Al Khayat, Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Theodore Bilharz Institute commented “These drugs represent a breakthrough in the treatment of HCV; studies have shown that administered alongside interferon, they can potentially raise cure rates to an unprecedented 80%”.
