A Study is Including Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Fasting During Ramadan in Egypt

CairoThe issue of Muslims with fasting during in despite serious health risks is about to be solved by diabetes awareness campaign launched by , a leading pharmaceutical company. 1,066 patients were evaluated by MSD in 43 clinical centers across Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. As a result of this study, over 50 million people with diabetes still fast during Ramadan despite the advice of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Ramsey Morad, Managing Director of MSD Egypt said “The results of this study are encouraging as is a condition that can greatly impact the lives of people with type 2 diabetes. Research has shown that hypoglycemia can be a serious problem in patients who fast during Ramadan. Further, repeat episodes of hypoglycemia may be associated with reluctance of patients to take their medications as prescribed, which makes managing their diabetes more difficult overall”

Hypoglycemia in people with type 2 diabetes can result from risk factors as decreased food intake, increased exercise, along with certain diabetes medications. In case of leaving hypoglycemia without treatment several serious issues can rise like loss of consciousness, convulsions and seizures, which require emergency treatment. In order to increase awareness on the disease, MSD is committed to generate further solutions following the study.
