Dubai Faces Huge Shortage in Blood During Ramadan

DubaiA senior official announced that a serious lack in blood in hospitals has resulted during from the huge number of accidents. Dr Laila Al Shaer, Head of the Dubai Blood Donation Centre () said “The Trauma Centre at Rashid Hospital and the Thalassemia Centre are the hardest hit by the shortage. This year, both summer and Ramadan have overlapped due to which we are facing a severe shortage. Demand is the highest at the trauma centre owing to a large number of accidents occurring during the Iftar rush”. She added “Since emergencies are top priority, they are the first preferences during shortages followed by Thalassemia patients and then elective surgeries that can be delayed. The DBDC provides blood and its derivatives to 27 government and private centers all over the . The centre fulfills 50 per cent of UAE‘s blood needs”.

An educational campaign has been launched by the DBDC encouraging people to donate before summer. In order to meet the shortage during summer when most residents are travelling, about 100-150 units of blood are required daily. “This is the month of giving and people should come up and donate blood,” Dr Laila commented. The Ministry of Health with the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities released a blood donation campaign at Dubai’s’ mosques.
