MoH in Jordan aims to Improve Mental Health Services

AmmanAn official of the Ministry of Health in Amman announced that an evaluation is being prepared in order to promote its experience in integrating services into primary healthcare. Bassam Hijjawi, director of the health ministry’s primary healthcare directorate revealed that this evaluation will take six months, saying “We have trained 15 general practitioners on how to diagnose and refer patients with mental health symptoms”. He noted that those practitioners’ performance will be reviewed by the ministry.

Hijjawi commented “If the results and performance turn out as planned, we will train more doctors in our primary health centers and the first group of doctors will become trainers” confirming that in addition to efforts to expand mental health services, the ministry intend to increase awareness about mental health and illness. “We want to reach a point where people are not ashamed of seeing psychiatrists,” he said, explaining that patients will recover rapidly as long as they visit doctors early.

Ahmad Yousfi, acting WHO representative stated “A total of 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental issues. While one in four people will develop some form of mental health issue during their lifetime”. According to the WHO website, the state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community is defined as mental health.
