Gynecological Regular Screening is Important for Women, Study

DubaiA top gynecologist in Dubai revealed that women in productive years must have a regular screening. Dr. Muna Tahlak, Head of Gynecology at Al Wasl Hospital said “While more women are becoming aware about the concept of regular screening, we still feel there is an urgent need for women to understand the importance of yearly gynecological check-ups. The most important regular check up for all women who are married is the yearly Pap smear test to check for cervical cancer. If screened early on, we can detect the pre-cancer cells and actually prevent cancer for developing.”

She added that women should do the yearly cervical cancer test and the term pre-conception counseling. “Woman should visit her gynecologist as soon as the woman is contemplating having a child and optimally around three to six months before attempting to conceive. The reason we encourage women to visit the clinic three to six months in advance is because this timeframe is sufficient to allow a women to better prepare her body for successful conception and to reduce any health risks which are within her control” Tahlak commented.

She said “In this check up, we screen the women for diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, blood sugar and also conduct tests to check the levels of Vitamin D and folic acid reserves in the body. Both folic acid and vitamin D are important for preconception and during conception as well. In the UAE, it is a known fact that a significant percentage of women have Vitamin D deficiency due to lack of exposure to sunlight and they do not have sufficient levels of folic acid reserves as well. This situation can easily be rectified by giving them vitamins three to six months before conception so that the body absorbs them.”
