A Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) official revealed that the Kingdom’s exports of medicine are fixed at JD433 million in 2011 decreasing by 13% from the previous year. JFDA Director General Mohammad Rawabdeh said “Jordan leads the region in manufacturing and exporting medicine, followed by Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom has a very low prevalence of counterfeit medicine, making up around 1 per cent of the drug market”. During 2010, about JD30 million medicines were counterfeit and smuggled as officials in the Public Security Department announced.
But globally, around 10% of pharmaceuticals are counterfeit. Without commenting on how many shops or restaurants were closed last year due to violating public health regulations, Rawabdeh mentioned that consumers are also responsible for food safety. He added “Consumers should report to us if they notice any violations in shops or restaurants. Whenever there is a complaint against any restaurant, our inspectors give a warning to that restaurant or shut it down, depending on the violation”.
