Imperative Need For Occupational Health and Safety In Middle East

Workplace injuries affect employee health, productivity, job satisfaction and increase the cost of business. Large high risk organizations in the Middle East today are faced with more challenges than their counterparts in rest of the world. The Middle East has a mix of culture which leads to high pressure on risk and change management. Here the role of occupational heath and safety not only becomes paramount to the top management but also imperative in the success of the company.

Occupational health and safety has traditionally been associated with those industries that are involved in high risk tasks such as oil and gas, construction or mining industries. However, today there are numerous grounds to indicate that occupational health and safety is considerably becoming significant across all industry sectors.

Many Middle East organizations have commenced to efficiently implement OHS management systems in order to protect the workforce and promote a healthy working environment. The strive is to build a safety culture in a changing environment and inculcate employees responsibility towards their own safety.

Fleming Gulf Conferences, an industry leader in HSE conferences, realises the need to showcase this crucial topic and hence is hosting Middle East OHS Strategy Summit to be held on 5 – 7 March 2012 in Abu Dhabi. The complete focus of this conference would be on OHS challenges and issues in the Middle East. The importance of committed leadership in driving a safety culture and the role of government in influencing this are need of the hour issues that this conference will bring to light.

Andrew Broderick, Director – EHSS, Sustainability and CSR at Aldar Properties, has joined the powerful speaker platform at this March conference and exhibition. Stressing on the importance oh OHS to company’s bottom-line, he said, “Over the last few years responsible companies in the Middle East are realizing OHS is an integral part of business performance and if they are not organized for OHS they will not be profitable or sustainable. OHS KPI’s should be embedded within a company’s institutional fabric at all levels of the organizational hierarchy to have a positive effect of behavioural and cultural change.”

The Middle East OHS Strategy Summit will be an ensemble of case studies, panel discussions and engaging sessions designed to provide a holistic purview on Occupational Health and Safety. This conference broadly attended by industry leaders and influencers will be a stalwart platform for networking interventions.

Pharmaceutical m-Health

About the conference
This conference will provide attendees with vital information on the current market and the opportunity to learn about mobile healthcare strategies from key industry players in this rapidly evolving field. In such an innovative and fast-paced sector, it is essential that you are kept up to date with the numerous ways the pharmaceutical industry can benefit from, and contribute to the increasing mobility of healthcare.

At this inaugural event, attendees will benefit from the unique opportunity to network with senior pharmaceutical executives from the leading organisations in the field as well as learning about a broad range of related issues in technological advancements and novel applications of pharmaceutical mobile healthcare.
The global telemedicine market is expected to grow from $9.8 billion in 2010 to $23 billion in 2015*, and therefore represents a major opportunity. The vast potential for mobile phones to change everyday life with their increasing technological capacity to connect people and systems over vast distances, send and receive larger amounts of information, and operate from ever more advanced platforms, affects people and businesses in a variety of ways. Healthcare is certainly no exception, and there are several areas of the pharmaceutical industry that are either undergoing fundamental changes to accommodate and gain from this mobility, or are about to.

Khadem Al Darie, team leader of the Emirates World Humanitarian Mobile Hospital mentioned that the first task of the center will be to give training to 18 national doctors and nurses through certain programs.

Dr. Al-Rabeeah reported that this information was depending on the reports brought from different health committees, involving statistical data and other information concerning precautionary measures taken by the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia. At all ports of entry of pilgrims he attributed an accurate surveillance operation, arriving by air, land or sea that proved in an effective way the forbidden entry of infectious diseases into the Kingdom .

He also explained “In addition to all that, King Abdullah Medical City this year involved in providing fourth level healthcare services to pilgrims such as complex cardiac treatment and surgery in addition to other types of very specialized and rare medical services” Moreover, he noted that remote digital monitoring cameras at all healthcare facilities aided in monitoring for any potential outbreaks.

The center was officially opened by His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman. It’s the first in the Middle East to offer treatment for both diabetes and obesity. It has seven sections to treat the disease such as for general diabetes, nutrition, physiotherapy, eye diabetes, foot diabetes, societal research and clinical research.”The centre is fully equipped with the latest machines to do weight-loss surgeries as well as provide therapy for diabetes and hypertension,” said Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Health. “Diabetes is the most common disease not only in the UAE but in many Arab and Gulf countries and worldwide. The ministry has been monitoring the disease for a long time.”

A new advanced system has been implemented at the centre will record patient data, doctor’s appointments and offer drug prescriptions all at one go. “The centre has a special laboratory equipped with the latest devices that will deliver results within 40 minutes and they will be transferred to the doctor before the patient’s appointment,” said Dr Mahmood Fikri, Executive Director for Health Policies at the ministry. “A patient can leave the centre within 48 hours after the surgery and resume normal life within a week to 10 days.”

The center involves nutrition specialists, a psychologist, nurses, specialists in obesity and diabetes and a physiologist. It is also preparing a national diabetes registry for assessing the accuracy of the number of people affected by the disease. “The centre will also conduct a number of researches in cooperation with Lund University in Sweden and local universities,” said Dr Fikri. “Specialized programs and courses in cooperation with international medical experts in future will help boost the local workforce to develop national specialists in diabetes and obesity treatment,” he added.
