MEDLAB Asia Pacific is an innovative laboratory exhibition and congress will now take place from 18-21 February, 2014, at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore. As strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region is driving the growth of the global IVD market, this meeting will provide an opportunity to learn about advances in science and their applications in laboratory medicine that will improve practice through improving patient outcomes in the region.

According to Simon Page, Managing Director, Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, “After much deliberation and open dialogue with our exhibitors, speakers and delegates, Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions and Scherago International have decided that the event will now take place in February, 2014.

“The previous dates, 3-5 September, 2013, had too many conflicts in an already very busy end-of-year calendar for speakers and associations. Informa is committed to the highest quality of speakers and educational content in our conferences. In order to fulfill this mission, and to guarantee that a maximum number of attendees can benefit from the accredited medical education that we offer, we feel that the decision to postpone the event is correct and will guarantee a successful event.”

The MEDLAB Asia Pacific conferences will consist of six individual scientific conferences, which handpick the best medical talents and academics from around the globe to share the latest developments in the field of laboratory medicine. As a crucial component of healthcare, laboratory medicine provides all those involved in the healthcare system with information that can make the difference in the quality, safety and efficacy of care given to patients. Doctors across all specialties depend on laboratories’ results to make critical decisions about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The confirmed conferences for MEDLAB Asia Pacific 2014 include Laboratory Management, Hematology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Molecular Diagnostics, and Research & Development.

Bernard Kouchner a former French Minister and the founder of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Médecins du Monde, will deliver the keynote address at the conference, which takes place at The Address Hotel Downtown Dubai on 1st May.

Commenting on why Bernard Kouchner had been invited to speak at the conference, MSH CEO Brigitte Chemla said:
“Bernard Kouchner is passionate about universal healthcare and has a wealth of experience, both in the political arena and from a humanitarian perspective having worked around the world in some of the most extreme conditions during manmade and natural disasters.

“He is a thought leader on global healthcare issues. A captivating speaker and a real inspiration to those involved in the industry at all levels. I am convinced that delegates at the conference will, without question, be inspired by this extraordinary man,” added Ms. Chemla,

“Mandatory healthcare for all is being rolled out across the GCC and is the topic of the moment in the healthcare industry in this region. This is therefore the right time to start a meaningful dialogue on the issues surrounding this issue. Our objective is to spark debate and discussion amongst the healthcare community,” said Dubai Insurance CEO, Abdellatif Abuqurah.

The longstanding healthcare proposal is to provide all UAE residents – regardless of nationality or income – with access to healthcare under an initiative towards launching a national health insurance scheme to provide medical cover for all people living in the UAE.

The proposal is designed to cover the basic healthcare needs of all UAE residents and provide funding for future investment in the country’s healthcare infrastructure. The compulsory national health insurance scheme would be funded by employers and individual subscribers.

Bernard Kouchner has served in several political posts in France, other than foreign affairs, he was France’s first Minister of Humanitarian Affairs followed by a period as French Minister of Health and has continued to exert pressure to allocate resources for the medical problems of needy populations throughout the world.
Mr. Kouchner founded and was appointed as the first director of “Médecins Sans Frontières in 1971”. Also known as Doctors without Borders, the organisation delivers emergency medical aid to victims of armed conflicts, epidemics, and natural and manmade disasters and to others who lack healthcare because of social and geographic isolation.

InterSystems’ diamond sponsorship of the conference reinforces its continuing commitment to the Saudi healthcare market. InterSystems opened a new office in Riyadh last year, in response to the growing demand for connected healthcare in Saudi Arabia, at a time when the Saudi Ministry of Health is encouraging major healthcare providers to embrace electronic health information systems. TrakCare is available in Arabic, uses the Hijri calendar, and is pre-configured to meet the CBAHI standards and other unique Saudi healthcare needs.

InterSystems is particularly well positioned to respond to the growing demand for connected healthcare in Saudi Arabia. TrakCare®, an Internet-based unified healthcare information system, is an internationally proven solution.

Conference attendees will be able to learn more about the latest enhancements to TrakCare for clinical, administrative, analytics, and medication management at dedicated demonstration stations, where specialists will answer their questions. Attendees will also be able to see medical device integration in action by getting their blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, and pulse rate measured and entered into the system right at InterSystems’ booth no. 201.

Designed for decision makers at healthcare systems, the Industry Solution Session will be hosted by InterSystems on May 1st. Paul Rhodes, the former eHealth Program Director at the Scottish Government, will be presenting on the “NHS Scotland National Strategy for Hospital Information System Deployment.”

“At this important conference, InterSystems will share insights from successful national deployments of TrakCare worldwide as well as the specific requirements for the Saudi market,” said Michel Amous, Country Manager, Middle East and India at InterSystems.

London (England), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) 23rd April, 2013 – Synbiotix, the leading provider of clinical audit and governance solutions for the measuring and monitoring of clinical and non-clinical performance have announced a partnership with Health Matrix Corporation which is believed will begin to answer the growing demand for meaningful key performance data in the region’s healthcare sector.

Synbiotix and Health Matrix announce partnership agreement to bring a new focus to the measuring and monitoring of clinical performance and governance in the Middle East.

Whilst focus in the past has been on building new healthcare facilities in the region, it’s only been in recent years that the attention has begun to be paid to how these facilities are run and the quality of care they are delivering. An important part of this is being able to capture key information at the point of care; a ward or department, that, when analysed in context, identifies areas for improvement and allows managers, senior managers and board-level executives to make necessary changes. ‘Ward to Board’ visibility of key performance metrics, captured and displayed in real-time through simple, clear web-based interfaces, allows organisations to identify gaps much faster and implement solutions much sooner.

Joe Lynham, CEO of Synbiotix commented on the agreement, “The partnership with Health Matrix is a significant step forward for Synbiotix and will allow us to work with an established leader in the provision of health IT solutions in the region. We are confident that the Middle East, which has long been of interest to us, represents great potential for growth and expansion and our solutions, which we have proven in the last ten years of operation in the UK and Cyprus, will allow the region to begin capturing meaningful and useful performance data which can be used to drive standards improvements in all areas of healthcare service provision.”

Abdul Rahman Qasim, CEO of Health Matrix added, “Today, the Middle East Healthcare sector faces a growing demand towards additional governance mechanisms to ensure efficient quality of treatment. Clinical governance itself presents a new challenge – to incorporatebest practices of clinical audit and quality within healthcare organizations’ day-to-day operations. We are confident that Synbiotix has the right tools and know-how to bring an increasing multi-professionalparticipation within healthcare organizations and achieve better outcomes of care towards improved patient care”.

To formally launch the partnership, Synbiotix will be exhibiting alongside Health Matrix at theMinistry of Health and HIMSS ME 2013 Conference and Exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 30thApril and 1st May.

April16, 2013-Dubai, UAE: Investing in Libya’s healthcare system is an opportunity to accelerate national economic development and growth, contribute to improving the quality of healthcare services and a move closer to achieving objectives of Libya’s national healthcare strategies and the country’s development goals. Investors from across the Middle East will be meeting at the Hospital Build & Infrastructure Middle East Exhibition & Congress, which will run from 3-5 June 2013 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, to discuss ways to achieve national healthcare goals within Libya.

The Libyan Ministry of Health has recently concluded a strategic master plan for healthcare requirements over the coming years. An enormous amount of private capital will be required to enhance and expand Libyan healthcare infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing population and to accelerate the growth of medical tourism in the country. Much like elsewhere in the region, there is a strong demand for tertiary care hospitals, with emphasis on the treatment of lifestyle diseases and specialized care.

According to Dr Ing. Hatem S. Aldarrat, General Manager, United Libya, an integrated solutions provider for hospital management and medical supplies, and exhibitor at the upcoming Hospital Build & Infrastructure Middle East Exhibition, “In Libya, the best investment opportunities lie in the building, equipping and management of hospitals and polyclinics; on both a government and private level. Another opportunity is the build and operation of pharmaceutical factories to cover the local and regional needs for general and specialized medicine.

“There is also an immediate need for medical education and training, which could provide additional opportunities for private sector providers or public-private-partnerships (PPP) within Libya. The communications technology that enables telemedicine could also be used to deliver training.”

With reference to their own project pipeline, Dr. Aldarrat said that United Libya is in the process of submitting their offer for executing the design, build and operation of 33 prefabricated general and specialized government hospitals across the Libya, each with the capacity for 60-120 beds. Among other things, United Libya is also looking to establish a series of private hospitals and clinics in different cities in Libya in affiliation with international hospitals and clinic.

Hospital Build & Infrastructure Middle East is organized by Informa Life Sciences Exhibition and will bring together investors, commissioners, backers and managers of major healthcare building projects together with planning, design, building, operations, management and refurbishment suppliers. Running alongside the exhibition is a multidisciplinary congress consisting of four leading conferences that will focus on delivering up-to-date information which will address all the disciplines involved with the hospital build process in the Middle East.

“Despite the fact that the share of private healthcare investment in Libya remains small, it appears that the government is now actively encouraging investment from private companies. Thyroid surgery is used to treat thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, and hyperthyroidism. During this procedure, part or all of the thyroid gland is removed. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck.During surgery, an incision is made in the skin. The muscle and other tissues are pulled aside to expose the thyroid gland.

“Rough estimates of prevalence rates of thyroid disorders in the Middle East indicate that about 5% of patients in the Middle East have thyroid disease. The committee was truly multispecialty with involvement of otolaryngology, endocrine and general surgery, endocrinology, anaesthesiology, speech-language pathology, general medicine, nursing and individuals representing thyroid surgery patients.

The patient’s voice post-thyroid surgery is affected when the thyroid surgeons have to dissect the thyroid gland from the recurrent laryngeal nerve that runs most of the muscles of the larynx. In rare cases of thyroid cancer the nerve may purposely be cut. In most cases, it is the irritation of the nerve with dissection that can affect its function. One of the recommendations is for the surgeon to identify the nerve and preserve it if possible. This is in contradiction to some surgeons who try to avoid the nerve and by doing so may inadvertently injure it.

This was accomplished by presenting CEO and board member of Nahdi Medical Company Dr. Bander T. Hamooh, Senior Director of Marketing and External Affairs Engineer, Hosam A. Alqurashi, key business VIPs and members of the press at the Hilton Hotel in Jeddah on Tuesday.

This step ensures the intention of the company toward the individual and community and its care about them in all issues related to health and beauty. This jealousy brings new hope and brighter future to service all customers and partners across the Kingdom.

“The new identity restates the company’s affirmed trust with its customers and partners, ensuring and promising to provide the best in health and pharmaceutical care to service the local community” said Dr. Hamooh. He added “The new identity and logo goes in line with the company’s vast expansion across the Kingdom especially that we are proud to say we are the largest and leading healthcare provider in selling and distributing medicines, children accessories and medical equipment in the Middle East and North Africa.”

Also he commented “The rebranding came 25 years after providing our valued customers with hope, a philosophy that we have always endured, and unfolds with the company’s ongoing strategy, maintaining the leading position in the Saudi market and adopting the highest level of professionalism in servicing our community with a solid identity and fresh logo”.

Alqurashi revealed “this phase is a new stage in the company’s lifeline- it provides a stronger motive to continue applying our company’s vision and ambition in delivering a new hope and better future to the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry in Saudi Arabia. The quality medicines and supplies are managed by professional and qualified staff, integrated by our fleet of technical and logistical support, something unique to the company.”

This transformation refers to a new leap in the level of products and services provided by Nahdi pharmacies in the Kingdom. The new identity enhances the company’s role in attracting, training and employing local cadres to support the government’s efforts in hiring ambitious young Saudis. Also, this will encourage the recruiters to activate their role in the economic and industrial development referring to the 670 operating outlets across the 75 cities and villages in the Kingdom.

He also asked Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Health, about healthy tips offered by hospitals and clinics to prevent chronic and life-threatening diseases.

Al Owais stressed on the importance of routine health tests because they allow the patient to discover his disease early and treat it quickly. He commented that Emiratis including himself lacked the culture of general check-ups.

“Prevention and early detection of diseases are the international trend nowadays. However, we lack the general check-up culture. Surveys of people, including you members of the FNC and myself and their routine medical exams, would show disappointing results,” he added.

This hospital is a result of a partnership between the Dubai-based Meydan Group , Mir Hashem Khoury (MHK) Group and the Korean health-care provider Bobath Memorial Hospital.

Rehabilitation improves a patient’s physical, sensory, and mental capabilities lost due to injury, illness or disease. The Dubai Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) under the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is recently offers a full range of rehabilitation treatments for patients 14 years and above.

This center can receive more than 30 in-patient and 80-120 out-patient cases per day. Dr Sung-min Park, chief director of Bobath Memorial Hospital, and neurologist told Gulf News “Due to paucity in services and capacity, the demand for rehabilitation in the UAE is high”.

“Most patients requiring rehabilitation go abroad for several months, up to two years. With rehabilitation therapies available in Dubai, residents as well are regional medical tourists will benefit,” he said.

Dr Sung added, “The specialty is in high demand among patients with cerebral palsy, stroke, hemorrhage, and multiple sclerosis, those who have suffered bone and spine damage as well as in the fields of disability, sports injury, prosthetics, and geriatric care.”

Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of Meydan City Corporation, told Gulf News that “Developing health care within Meydan — an integrated city concept is part of its DNA. We wanted to make quality healthcare accessible in a setting that is green and tranquil. Based on a joint study between Meydan and MHK Group, we identified the specialties that are lacking in the country.”

Further, the new hospital will focus on training Emirati doctors, said Shoaib Khoury, Managing Director of MHK. “The senior staff from Korea will train Emirati doctors in-house over a period of 10 years. Our plan is also to establish training and education partnerships.” He commented. Dermatology, cosmetic surgery, spine surgery, orthopedics, fertility and dental are some of specialties in the hospital.

This system contains glowing bubble tubes, projected images of calm oceans, soft colored lights and nature sounds.

This facility is the first of its kind in the Middle East named the Snoezelen (pronounced SNOO-ze-len) Room. The multi-sensory environment will ease agitation; reduce apathy commonly associated with ageing factors like hearing and vision impairment, memory loss, and reduced cognitive function in elderly patients.
According to Dr. Salwa Al Suwaidi, geriatrician and director of the centre, the multi-sensory stimulation room is based on the Snoezelen therapy which makes use of sights, sounds and smells.

She said, speaking to Gulf News “The therapy is favored in the West to help elderly patients suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia and other related conditions. It is also used to help patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and speech therapy. The room complements occupational and physio therapies in providing long-term care”.

She mentioned that the room has being customized to suite Emirati taste. She added “Our Emirati clients choose traditional music and prefer historical and cultural images of the UAE in the room”.

Mila Malunda, rehabilitation aide, who sees a minimum of 12 patients per day at the Snoezelen Room, told Gulf News “I provide hand and foot reflexology while patients benefit from the hydrotherapy massage bed.”

“The room is one of the tools to make the centre unique and equip it with state of the art equipment and therapies” said Dr. Ahmad Bin Kalban, CEO of primary healthcare at the DHA.
