The Chairman of Pharmacists Association in Iran, Dr. Rahbar Mozhdehi Azar, mentioned that the country is currently producing 97% of its requirements of medications.  He added that the 3% of medications are for products requiring high technologies for manufacture or their consumption in Iran is limited, so it such medications have no economical outcome for their productions.  Dr. Azar said that Iran is about to achieve self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical products and soon the country will be able to export some of its nationally-produced medications.

In order to improve the standard of healthcare service in Qatar, the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) is planning to make it obligatory to all private healthcare facilities to have accreditation from a recognized international agency or local authorities. A senior official of the Medical Licensing Department (MLD) at SCH said that SCH is managing a project to gain get international accreditation for all primary healthcare centers in addition to private clinics and hospitals in Qatar.

The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), a major healthcare provider in Qatar, has successfully gained Joint Commission International (JCI), from the United States, to all its hospitals. The HSC Official said “JCI accredits only hospitals. We are working with another leading international agency for evaluating the services of all primary health centers and private healthcare facilities and getting them accredited by the agency,” He added that gaining accreditation is another step towards improving the quality of healthcare services at the facilities of HMC.

The SCH official also noted that the MLD is currently developing its accreditation standards. All private clinics and hospitals will be asked to gain accreditation, once the standards are finished, from this agency or any other recognized international agencies. He said “Such accreditation will be made mandatory for all private healthcare facilities in future to ensure the quality of their services. No facility that fails to get this accreditation will be allowed to operate in the country, especially after the national insurance scheme is implemented,”

Abu Dhabi authorities have removed a ban on school canteens that prohibited them from selling pies. However, the ban is still active on other dairy products with high fat. Recently, The Abu Dhabi Food Control Center mentioned that all schools canteens are now permitted to sell all types of pies including manaeesh and croissants, “in line with specific health rules” The schools are going to reopen in UAE next September.

The Abu Dhabi Food Control Center noted that “As for dairy, school canteens are allowed to sell only low fat milk and its products, including labneh and cheese. Whole milk is not allowed,” The previous statement was included in a letter sent by the center to local schools. Moreover, adjustments were made by the center so that the area of school canteen is to be 20 square meters instead of 30. The letter said “The center is taking measures to improve nutrition and hygiene standards at school canteens, including better health conditions for canteen staff and those involved in supplying food to these canteens,” The center also mentioned that canteens are to prepare food in their facilities, but they can get it ready directly from suppliers.

In a new initiative, the money paid for Zakat was used for treating patients suffering from hepatitis. For the first year, a number of 74 patients throughout UAE got benefits from this initiative, as Zakat funds which worth Dh1, 605,000 which was used to treat these 74 hepatitis patients. They also received financial support during the course of treatment.

The Zakat fund is provided for a year, which is the usual period needed by the majority of patients for treatment. However, patients who still need treatment after the one year period can reapply again to have the fund. A spokesman said today “The patients included are of varying nationalities, and reside in different parts of the UAE. We provide aid for one year, which is the standard dosage period required for these patients, after which most patients are cured,” He continued “Out of the 74 patients included, 70% have been cured, and the remaining are almost cured as well. Those who require further treatment can reapply, and we will study the case, and determine whether to provide further aid,”

The new Zakat funding initiative was named “Ajir w Afiya” which means “Health and Blessings” in Arabic. The initiative is going to provide funds to treat several diseases in addition to hepatitis. However, since there is a significant increase in the number of hepatitis patients, a special section of the fund will be directed for their treatments. The spokesman said “We hope to increase our aid to include an increase in the number of patients being helped by 10 per cent,”

Tawam Hospital in Al-Ain, UAE, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, announced a new successful addition to the operation facilities of the hospital, which is a new specially developed operating table that allows for 360 degree surgery. The table can rotate in 180 degrees.  By using the new table, surgeons at Tawam Hospital will have access to both sides of the body, posterior and anterior planes.

The new operation table is the first to be used in the Middle East; it proves its significance in certain conditions such as spinal injuries, especially those including cervical dislocations, which is frequently seen among victims of traffic accidents. The new table was used with more than 12 patients helping them by reducing the recovery time.

Dr. Amr El Shawarby, Chief Neurosurgery and Senior Consultant at Tawam Hospital, commented “Spinal injuries including fracture dislocations of the cervical spine are very difficult to treat on a flat, immobile operating table. Being able to rotate a patient 180 degrees, and manipulate from both sides of the spine, means that the Tawam operating team can restore alignment and dislocate locked facets without endangering the delicate neural structure. “He continued “The rotating table means that a patient with an injury who previously would have needed to remain in hospital for up to 21 days to recover can now go home after just two days, and the metal cages which would have been inserted to help fuse the cervical spine back together are no longer necessary.”

Among the most recent cases at Tawam Hospital, where the new operation table was used, an 18 year old female with a cervical spinal injury that was caused duo to a car accident in Al Ain. Thanks to the new table, she was dismissed from the hospital after four days only. Another patient was a 25 year old male who had an injury during a car accident which resulted in fracture dislocation of the cervical spine. That patient was sent home after only two days.

Tawam Hospital is a facility of the SEHA Health System and is managed and owned by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company which is holding responsibility for the treatment and medication processes of all the public hospitals and clinics across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al-Saihati, chairman of Saihati Group, announced that a new charitable kidney center will be built in the Eastern Province city of Qateef. The new center is going to cost about SR10 million. A contract was signed between Dr. Al-Saihati and another national company to start constructing the center, which is going to feature the latest in medical equipment needed for treating kidney patients.

Dr. Al-Saihati confirmed the significance of building the new kidney center as the prevalence of renal diseases in Saudi Arabia is continuing to increase. He said “This center is very important for the people of Qateef in particular and the Kingdom as a whole. It will have specialized sections for the treating men, women, and children,”

The Saihati Kidney Center will be constructed within the Qateef Central Hospital complex. It is going to occupy an area of 1,900 square meters and should be ready to operate in two years time. President of Saihati Group and the project manager, Najeeb Saihati, mentioned that the new kidney center is to host about 50 beds. It will also include seven clinics and four peritoneal units along with other administrative and consulting offices in addition to a lecture hall, all these sections will be in the ground floor. The first floor will include 14 hemodialysis units for men and 16 for women in addition to 8 units for children. The first floor will also have isolation rooms, treatment rooms and a lab.

The government of Saudi Arabia announced that it has approved recent plans that aim to build a new teaching hospital in Najran University. The new hospital will cost about of SR600 million. The announcement was made by Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah, Najran Governor. He said that new hospital will aid the medical students at Najran University to gain practical experience and thus enhance the level of healthcare services in the area. Prince Mishaal expressed his thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and the Crown Prince Sultan for approving the project.
