Al Ain Al Ain Hospital has completed the redevelopment of its 14-bed intensive care unit (ICU) and has added three new operating theatres, promising the best possible medical service to the people living in the oasis city.

The hospital has also commissioned new clinical imaging diagnostic machines, including a CT scanner for the radiology department.

“These new facilities and services set a standard that is comparable to some of the best health-care institutions in the world,” said a spokesperson of the hospital.

George Jepson, chief executive of the hospital, said the completion of these facilities is part of a larger programme to redevelop the hospital into one of the best health-care institutions in the region and beyond. “This is a crucial milestone for us,” he said.

The new ICU is spacious and modern. It is comprised of 14 enclosed and private cubicles, including two paediatric units, two isolation units and one VIP room. The unit will be headed by a dedicated expert who will be assisted by a multi-disciplinary team of medical experts.

The new operating theatres will also provide specialist operations such as joint replacements and surgeries for sports injuries, Jepson said.

“The most important innovation in the operating theatres is their positioning as a trauma centre, which will have a specialised team of medical experts from all crucial disciplines under a trauma leader to cater to critical cases,” said Jepson.

Professor Stefan Marlovits, director of Trauma Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and deputy medical director of Al Ain Hospital, said the trauma centre has extreme importance since 20 per cent of the deaths in the UAE occur due to accidents.

Al Ain Hospital is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for all the curative activities of the public hospitals and clinics in the capital.

Al Ain Hospital announced that it has completed another redevelopment of its facilities and services with the completed project for three new Operating Theatre (OT), an upgraded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a new Clinical Imaging diagnostic machines.

In addition, the most important innovation in the OT is its positioning as a Trauma Centre, which will have a specialised team of medical experts from all crucial disciplines under a trauma leader to cater to critical cases.

Prof. Michael Fuchsjaeger, Consultant Radiologist and Associate Professor of Radiology at Medical University of Vienna is in charge of the new Clinical Imaging Institute at Al Ain Hospital. He said: “The new CT Scanner is a revolution in clinical imaging. It scans faster than the heart beat. As a result, the patient need not be pre-medicated prior to the scanning procedure. Because it is a dual source scanner with two radiating sources, the scanning procedure is extremely quick and complete allowing us to do diagnostic imaging for multiple critical cases.”

Another advantage of the new CT Scanner is that it exposes patients to 50 per cent less radiation risk than most other CT machines. While radiation risk is already small with CT Scanners, this advantage, along with its rapid diagnostic capabilities is of particular advantage in times of critical medical intervention.

Al Ain Hospital announced that the facility’s enhanced sections and services such as those in the newly commissioned Labour and Delivery area contributed positively to the increase in patient flow.  The hospital continues to make improvements to help meet or exceed patient expectations.

Mr. George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital said, “We consider the rise in patients to Al Ain Hospital as a very positive indicator of increased patient satisfaction. It is firm evidence that the current redevelopment of the facility infrastructure, some projects of which are complete already, has been perceived by the community in the right spirit.”

“The redevelopment and service enhancements to our current medical faculties should be looked at as an interim step in development of a true state-of-the-art facility in the long-term.  We have already initiated the development of our new hospital on campus.  It is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2013.  It will integrate all our services across 358,000 square metres of a “Healing Oasis’ designed to combine the friendliness of oasis with state-of-the-art facilities competitive with the best hospitals in the world”, added Jepson.

In 2009 Al Ain Hospital opened a new Labour and Delivery Department and also initiated redevelopment of Radiology, ICU and 3 new Operation Theatre which are now in advanced stages of completion.

Further, the hospital undertook a major revamp of the Emergency Medicine Department as part of the healthcare entity’s vision to provide the efficient services in critical care and trauma management to the community.

Al Ain Hospital today announced the start of a renovation and expansion program of its Emergency Department, which will lead to the creation of a better, more efficient and reinforced modern 24/7 critical services centre.

The hospital, managed by VAMED and the Medical University of Vienna, owned and operated by SEHA, said in a statement that it anticipated reduced operational efficiency on February 4th  and 5th  2010, when the department will be moved to a temporary location. During these two days, patients are requested to consider other emergency facilities for treatment.

Mr. George Jepson – Al Ain Hospital CEO said, ” the redevelopment of the Emergency Medicine Department  was being undertaken as part of the healthcare entity’s vision to provide better and efficient services in critical care to the community.”

Commenting on the expansion, Professor Wilhelm Behringer, the Head of Emergency Department said: “The refurbishment of the existing department will lead to enhanced capacity and the centre will be made capable to handle cases with reinforced efficiency. The expansion program is extensive and in its entirety will take six to eight months to complete.”

Commenting on the project, Professor Gerhard Schwab – Medical Director of Al Ain Hospital aid “During the first two days of renovation, we anticipate reduced operational efficacy of emergency services, as the department will be moved to a temporary location. We request the patients to seek emergency medical care in other hospitals for the two days. The emergency services at Al Ain Hospital will resume as usual on the 6th of February. ”

“Our aim in redesigning the Emergency Department is to ensure improved patient flow and provide improvement treatment procedures,” added Prof. Schwab.

Al Ain’s Emergency Department  handles approximately  370 patients a day (130,000 patients a year). It has 27 emergency treatment beds, providing 24/7 care to the critically ill and injured. It treats patients from all the surrounding areas.

Cases treated at the Emergency Department include: pain management, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, genitourinary, gynecological, eye, ENT, metabolic, neurological, psychiatric, toxicological, trauma and burns cases.

The department also provides a fast track service for the treatment of less serious injuries.

The Emergency Department has a triage area, a minor trauma room, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation room, a paediatrics emergency area and a plaster room.

Following her success as Quality Manager, Mrs. Hillman was appointed the Acting Hospital Director in 2008. She stepped in to oversee the day to day running of the hospital with stride overseeing the construction, opening and running of a new Primary Healthcare Center, leading ANHAA through a successful ISO recertification and maintaining the institution’s reputation of providing quality healthcare services.

Al Ain Patients at Al Ain Hospital have been advised to bring all their identification documents with them on their next visit as the hospital has started computerising data to eliminate paper-based medical records.

The documents required include health cards, insurance cards and identification papers such as identity cards and passports. The information will be stored and updated electronically with important safeguards to protect patients’ confidentiality, said the hospital’s spokesperson.

The move is part of a system that will shortly be deployed across all the hospitals and clinics operating under Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA). This will make the SEHA the only fully electronic health care system in the region.

Safety

The new Health Information System will improve hospital functions and eventually eliminate paper medical records. It will also improve patient safety, enhance patient confidentiality and reduce the need for additional testing when a patient is referred to another SEHA facility anywhere in Abu Dhabi, the spokesperson added.

Carl Stanifer, CEO of the SEHA, said: “The system is created and designed to help health organizations improve financial and clinical outcomes by driving error, variance and waste from the care process. Soon, all our SEHA facilities will be linked by this system with added convenience and safety for our patients.”

George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital, said the technology allows clinicians to run tests, make diagnoses, place orders, fill medications, document care and remit bills using a single information system.

It also eliminates the duplication of tests as well as the chances of giving inappropriate medication.

The system, to be operational 24 hours a day, will improve communication between care providers and patients, which facilitates quicker and more effective patient treatment.

“The new system will tremendously enhance patient care at Al Ain Hospital,” Jepson said, noting that more than 450 hospital employees were trained to operate it.

Al Ain Hospital has announced it will open an array of sub-specialities at its Child Health Institute as part of a comprehensive expansion strategy.

According to George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital, the expansion was driven by the need to convert the hospital into an entity which provides specialised, dedicated and unique paediatric medical care in the region.

“We are all set to diversify and open an array of sub-specialities,” he said, adding that the aim is to strengthen the reputation of Al Ain Hospital as a community hospital catering to both nationals and expatriates.

The diversification of the Child Health Institute with special focus on introducing sub-specialities, he said, is also aimed at enhancing paediatric medical care expertise across the region.

He hopes this will enable the institute to be known as a world-class centre of excellence in this realm of medical intervention and advisory services across the GCC. Under the new reinforcement strategy, the institute will open sections specialising in paediatric neurology, child metabolic diseases, chronic allergies and advanced paediatric surgery as well as a dedicated intensive care and adolescence clinic.

Dr Gerhard Schwab, medical director at the hospital, said Al Ain region needs sub-speciality paediatric healthcare.

Al Ain Hospital is organizing a Diabetes Awareness campaign during the month of November in support of World Diabetes Day the theme of which is Diabetes: Education and Prevention.

Based on the latest World Health Organization (WHO) information, the United Arab Emirates comes second place in the world with the highest prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus – about 24%, which means that for every 5 adults (age 20 – 79) there is one with diabetes. The only other country with a higher rate is the tiny island nation of Nauru in the Western Pacific.

Commenting on the Diabetes Awareness campaign, Mr. George Jepson, Chief Executive Officer of Al Ain Hospital has stated that “Al Ain Hospital together with other SEHA facilities throughout Abu Dhabi, supports ongoing health promotion campaigns that raise awareness about diseases such as diabetes and plays an active role in the community through promoting health education to the public”.

The main objective of the Diabetes Awareness campaign is to identify diabetic risk factors at an early stage, which is essential in preventing the onset of the disease. Complications of diabetes can include conditions affecting:

The heart
The eyes
The feet
The kidneys.

The Al Ain Hospital Diabetes Awareness campaign is also focusing on raising awareness of the increasing prevalence of all types of diabetes (type 1 and type 2) within the community. This includes highlighting the risk factors associated with it such as:

Patients with higher blood glucose levels than normal may have pre-diabetes and are at risk of developing the disease within 5 to 10 years.

Diabetes is also one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. It can affect children at any age, including pre-school children and even toddlers.

Yet diabetes in children is often diagnosed late and only picked up when the child has diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and present at the hospital emergency room, or it is misdiagnosed completely.

Al Ain Hospital’s have organized several activities to address these concerns during November:

Activities

Al-Ain hospital installed stands in different locations to help educate the public about diabetes, how to manage it and how to prevent it.

Free screening during GCC youth rugby champion-ship that was held in Al-Ain rugby club, Free screening in Higher college of technology Al Ain.

These stands are manned by nurses who take blood samples from the patient and give them test results on the spot. If a person has a high blood glucose level, the nurses will refer the patient to Al Ain Hospital Diabetes Centre.

“Our objective is to raise awareness of diabetes and its complications throughout the community and encourage early diagnosis. Al Ain Hospital Diabetes Center’s multidisciplinary program treats patients with all forms of diabetes and its related complications” stated Dr. Talaat Al Deyab, Specialist Outpatients Services Clinical Manager, Al Ain Hospital.

Dr. Shwab, the Medical Director at Al Ain Hospital added “Our main objective is to educate the patients and their families about diabetes and its related complications, while encouraging patients to take an active role in their own diabetes management.

The radiology arm – the Clinical Imaging Institute – of Al Ain Hospital has initiated a major enhancement and redevelopment of its facilities in its continuing quest to provide seamless, quick and efficient services in line with the hospital’s endeavor to become a comprehensive and cutting-edge community health care services provider.

The reinforcement of the facilities will include the introduction of a state-of-the-art C.T scan machine, which is considered to incorporate the most advanced imaging technology in the world and one of its kind in UAE

Al Ain Hospital is managed by Medical University of Vienna, VAMED and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company.

Commenting on the new initiatives for the Clinical Imaging Institute, Mr. George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital said:

Prof. Michael Fuchsjaeger, a Consultant Radiologist and an Associate Professor of Radiology, Medical University of Vienna with specialization in breast imaging, women’s imaging, imaging of the pelvis, gender imaging, who recently joined the hospital as the Head of Clinical Imaging Institute is spearheading the modernization.

Emphasising that the new facilities and technological reinforcements will make the Al Ain Hospital Clinical Imaging Institute a significantly advanced entity in its services, Prof.

Michael Fuchsjaeger said: “It is imperative that any advanced health care services facility like the Al Ain Hospital should have a competent and seamlessly efficient radiology division to support the quick diagnosis and in turn expert treatment of patients. It is in this light that we are introducing advanced clinical diagnostic facilities. Sophisticated technology along with advanced diagnostic features will make the department a fully digitalized entity on par with the best global medical institutions.”

He said the highlight of the reinforcements is the diversification into the sub specialty of breast imaging. “We are working towards setting up a brand new breast imaging centre as a separate unit under the Clinical Imaging Institute soon. For this purpose we will be acquiring state-of-the-art mammography machines and the breast imaging unit will start functioning in the next couple of months once the machines are installed.”

Dr. Michael said the Clinical Imaging Institute improvements were focused on two fronts – technology with the acquisition of the latest computerized machinery – and a reinforcement of expertise with the deployment of requisite and relevant trained manpower.

The Clinical Imaging Institute enhancement plan will also include the acquisition and installation of a range of new machines, including:
- Two new fluoroscopes facilitating dynamic examinations
- Two ultra sound machines
- Two mobile x-ray units
- A new angiography unit
