Al Ain Al Ain Hospital has completed the redevelopment of its 14-bed intensive care unit (ICU) and has added three new operating theatres, promising the best possible medical service to the people living in the oasis city.

The hospital has also commissioned new clinical imaging diagnostic machines, including a CT scanner for the radiology department.

“These new facilities and services set a standard that is comparable to some of the best health-care institutions in the world,” said a spokesperson of the hospital.

George Jepson, chief executive of the hospital, said the completion of these facilities is part of a larger programme to redevelop the hospital into one of the best health-care institutions in the region and beyond. “This is a crucial milestone for us,” he said.

The new ICU is spacious and modern. It is comprised of 14 enclosed and private cubicles, including two paediatric units, two isolation units and one VIP room. The unit will be headed by a dedicated expert who will be assisted by a multi-disciplinary team of medical experts.

The new operating theatres will also provide specialist operations such as joint replacements and surgeries for sports injuries, Jepson said.

“The most important innovation in the operating theatres is their positioning as a trauma centre, which will have a specialised team of medical experts from all crucial disciplines under a trauma leader to cater to critical cases,” said Jepson.

Professor Stefan Marlovits, director of Trauma Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and deputy medical director of Al Ain Hospital, said the trauma centre has extreme importance since 20 per cent of the deaths in the UAE occur due to accidents.

Al Ain Hospital is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for all the curative activities of the public hospitals and clinics in the capital.

Prof. Michael Fuchsjaeger, Consultant Radiologist and Associate Professor of Radiology at Medical University of Vienna is in charge of the new Clinical Imaging Institute at Al Ain Hospital. He said: “The new CT Scanner is a revolution in clinical imaging. It scans faster than the heart beat. As a result, the patient need not be pre-medicated prior to the scanning procedure. Because it is a dual source scanner with two radiating sources, the scanning procedure is extremely quick and complete allowing us to do diagnostic imaging for multiple critical cases.”

Another advantage of the new CT Scanner is that it exposes patients to 50 per cent less radiation risk than most other CT machines. While radiation risk is already small with CT Scanners, this advantage, along with its rapid diagnostic capabilities is of particular advantage in times of critical medical intervention.

Al Ain Hospital today announced the start of a renovation and expansion program of its Emergency Department, which will lead to the creation of a better, more efficient and reinforced modern 24/7 critical services centre.

The hospital, managed by VAMED and the Medical University of Vienna, owned and operated by SEHA, said in a statement that it anticipated reduced operational efficiency on February 4th  and 5th  2010, when the department will be moved to a temporary location. During these two days, patients are requested to consider other emergency facilities for treatment.

Mr. George Jepson – Al Ain Hospital CEO said, ” the redevelopment of the Emergency Medicine Department  was being undertaken as part of the healthcare entity’s vision to provide better and efficient services in critical care to the community.”

Commenting on the expansion, Professor Wilhelm Behringer, the Head of Emergency Department said: “The refurbishment of the existing department will lead to enhanced capacity and the centre will be made capable to handle cases with reinforced efficiency. The expansion program is extensive and in its entirety will take six to eight months to complete.”

Commenting on the project, Professor Gerhard Schwab – Medical Director of Al Ain Hospital aid “During the first two days of renovation, we anticipate reduced operational efficacy of emergency services, as the department will be moved to a temporary location. We request the patients to seek emergency medical care in other hospitals for the two days. The emergency services at Al Ain Hospital will resume as usual on the 6th of February. ”

“Our aim in redesigning the Emergency Department is to ensure improved patient flow and provide improvement treatment procedures,” added Prof. Schwab.

Al Ain’s Emergency Department  handles approximately  370 patients a day (130,000 patients a year). It has 27 emergency treatment beds, providing 24/7 care to the critically ill and injured. It treats patients from all the surrounding areas.

Cases treated at the Emergency Department include: pain management, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, genitourinary, gynecological, eye, ENT, metabolic, neurological, psychiatric, toxicological, trauma and burns cases.

The department also provides a fast track service for the treatment of less serious injuries.

The Emergency Department has a triage area, a minor trauma room, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation room, a paediatrics emergency area and a plaster room.

Al Ain Patients at Al Ain Hospital have been advised to bring all their identification documents with them on their next visit as the hospital has started computerising data to eliminate paper-based medical records.

The documents required include health cards, insurance cards and identification papers such as identity cards and passports. The information will be stored and updated electronically with important safeguards to protect patients’ confidentiality, said the hospital’s spokesperson.

The move is part of a system that will shortly be deployed across all the hospitals and clinics operating under Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA). This will make the SEHA the only fully electronic health care system in the region.

Safety

The new Health Information System will improve hospital functions and eventually eliminate paper medical records. It will also improve patient safety, enhance patient confidentiality and reduce the need for additional testing when a patient is referred to another SEHA facility anywhere in Abu Dhabi, the spokesperson added.

Carl Stanifer, CEO of the SEHA, said: “The system is created and designed to help health organizations improve financial and clinical outcomes by driving error, variance and waste from the care process. Soon, all our SEHA facilities will be linked by this system with added convenience and safety for our patients.”

George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital, said the technology allows clinicians to run tests, make diagnoses, place orders, fill medications, document care and remit bills using a single information system.

It also eliminates the duplication of tests as well as the chances of giving inappropriate medication.

The system, to be operational 24 hours a day, will improve communication between care providers and patients, which facilitates quicker and more effective patient treatment.

“The new system will tremendously enhance patient care at Al Ain Hospital,” Jepson said, noting that more than 450 hospital employees were trained to operate it.

Al Ain Hospital has announced it will open an array of sub-specialities at its Child Health Institute as part of a comprehensive expansion strategy.

According to George Jepson, CEO of Al Ain Hospital, the expansion was driven by the need to convert the hospital into an entity which provides specialised, dedicated and unique paediatric medical care in the region.

“We are all set to diversify and open an array of sub-specialities,” he said, adding that the aim is to strengthen the reputation of Al Ain Hospital as a community hospital catering to both nationals and expatriates.

The diversification of the Child Health Institute with special focus on introducing sub-specialities, he said, is also aimed at enhancing paediatric medical care expertise across the region.

He hopes this will enable the institute to be known as a world-class centre of excellence in this realm of medical intervention and advisory services across the GCC. Under the new reinforcement strategy, the institute will open sections specialising in paediatric neurology, child metabolic diseases, chronic allergies and advanced paediatric surgery as well as a dedicated intensive care and adolescence clinic.

Dr Gerhard Schwab, medical director at the hospital, said Al Ain region needs sub-speciality paediatric healthcare.
