The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) celebrated International Nurses Day on the Wednesday, May 12, at the DHA medical library.

Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General of the DHA is well aware of the importance of nurses in the health sector and felicitates them for their contribution. At the DHA, we are proud to have excellent talent-pool and we always provide our staff with continuous training opportunities to further enhance their skills. Nurses are in many ways the backbone of the healthcare system and they contribute greatly to the betterment of healthcare services.”

He highlighted that recently the DHA hospitals to complete a one year midwifery course. “We are proud to mention that 23 of our nurses completed the first midwifery course in the UAE and are positively contributing to the development of this specialized nursing field.”

This year, the United Nations (UN) declared 2010 to be the International Year of the Nurse and the theme is – Nurses leading the fight against chronic diseases with a vision towards UN millennium development goals.

Based on this theme, the conference held many lectures and Dr. Zakaria Zaki Al Attal, Director of Quality & Performance Management, Hospitals Services Sector at the DHA highlighted the importance of sustaining and improving the quality of service that nurses provide their patients. He stressed on the importance of training to ensure nurses were constantly updated with the latest developments in their field.

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is leading a comprehensive study to evaluate the most feasible options for the private sector to take on a
substantial role in health and healthcare management.

A high-level committee has been set up in this regard and is headed by Khalid Al Shaikh Mubarak, CEO of Shared Support Services Sector at the authority.

This committee will explore the role of the private sector in the delivery of health services such as emergency and trauma services.

“It is imperative that we thoroughly evaluate all the parameters to decide the best possible model which suits our needs and helps provide excellent healthcare services to our main stakeholder- our patients.”

Al Shaikh Mubarak said, “PPP has been a successful model globally and has become an emerging trend over the last few years.”

DHA is working with Pricewaterhouse Coopers’ Dubai office, a reputed consulting firm which has extensive experience in this field in the Gulf region and globally.

The Surgery Conference, in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, was held in Dubai under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of the DHA.

There was a two-day extensive workshop to further enhance the surgical skills of 60 doctors, most of who work at DHA hospitals.

His Excellency Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority said, “This initiative is in line with our strategy to extend and strengthen cooperation between various international medical organizations such as the esteemed college. This program is aimed at improving the skills of our physicians and promotes a climate of continuous medical education which helps further improve the level of medical services provided to our patients.”

He added “At the Dubai Health Authority, we are fully dedicated to constantly providing training opportunities and seeking international accreditation. Our Medical Education Department works to ensure we regularly provide our physicians the best possible training that meets international standards and keeps them up-to-date with the latest advances in medicine. Therefore this program is of vital importance to us.”

Mafraq Hospital supported the International Thalassemia day, organized by the Pediatric Department at Mafraq Hospital for thalassemia patients and their parents, and increase awareness about the genetic disorder, Thalassemia.

Thalassemia is a serious problem for affected patients who require regular, and in some cases, frequent blood transfusions for survival.

Mafraq Hospital provides treatment for children suffering from the disorder. Patients and visitors attending the event were entertained by the Abu Dhabi Police Band, an illusionist and a clown.

John Nickens, CEO at Mafraq Hospital, welcomed all guests and Dr. Saggaf Alawi Al Saggaf, Consultant Pediatrician In-charge of the Thalassemia Unit, said: “Mafraq Hospital recognizes the importance of raising awareness about Thalassemia. Screening is the key tool in preventing this disorder.”

In a medical symposium, experts called for integration, not alienation of schizophrenia affected persons in the UAE.

In addition, the symposium highlighted the urgent need for doctors to focus on treating the person as a whole when handling schizophrenia cases through a four fold treatment that works on the patient’s social, physical, mental and psychological aspects.

The symposium focused on the importance of employers and psychiatric groups to work together to eliminate victimization of schizophrenia patients at workplace and ensure that their jobs are secure, under supervision.

Dr. Alaa Haweel, Consultant and Psychiatrist, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, said: “Just about less than half percent of the UAE adult population is schizophrenic. Schizophrenic people often lose their jobs as the disease can affect the productivity of the patient, not to mention his social and thinking skills. In the UAE, many of these patients are working as the government policy encourages the private and public sectors to be considerate to these cases. Abu Dhabi government has launched a division which is one of the best in the region to offer day and house treatment to the Schizophrenia related patients to enhance their social skills through a group of psychiatrists and physiologists. Advanced techniques are used which work on enhancing the results, specially the negative symptoms related to this disease.”

“Schizophrenia-affected persons flourish where the employees are considerate. We have a committee which looks into the job fitness of every patient. We liaise with his boss and colleagues and advise them how to best communicate with the patient to get best results of the treatment. Also we advise on the working environment ideal to his health and how to let him maintain his job.”

The conference discussed the effectiveness of Quetiapine Extended Release, approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for the treatment of Schizophrenia.

Dr. Haweel said that Schizophrenic patients in the UAE could be students or working people or anyone else. Stigma of Schizophrenia in the UAE is rapidly decreasing and the families are caring, so that people with this disease carry on with their normal lives and raise families which are supervised by the “Extended Family” of their parents at most cases.

Quetiapine Extended Release from AstraZeneca enhances compliance of Schizophrenic patients as the once daily dosage makes it easier on the patient to comply with the treatment and thereby preventing relapses.

Dr. Issam Emam, Head of Psychiatric Division, TAWAM Hospital, said: “One percent of the people in the UAE are prone to Schizophrenia due to genetic factors.

Dr. Issam said early detection helps in more effective treatment with most of patients getting fully integrated in society, thanks to the advanced medicines, and added that the UAE had made remarkable strides in this area since 2005.

René Kahn, Associated Scientist of Julius Clinical Research, who led the discussion, threw light on the status of schizophrenia in the world and the importance of early effective treatment. A specialist in Psychiatry and in Neurology, René Kahn is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Head of the Division of Neuroscience at the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht, The Netherlands.

While Dr. Emam pointed out that 60 percent of the schizophrenia patients followed the treatment and were able to lead normal lives, while 40 percent did not comply with it due to ignorance which leads to relapses. Also, families sometimes hold a responsibility in not getting their children to continue the treatment set by doctors.

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) announced that it will develop mini-clinics at health centres for treating patients with asthma and raising awareness on how to prevent the disease.

DHA Primary Health Care Sector CEO Dr Ahmad Ebrahim Saif Kalban, said “We have already finished the primary stages which are training efficient doctors and nurses to deal specifically with patients that suffer from respiratory problems.”

DHA Health Affairs Department Director, Dr Nahed Abdul Khaleq Monsef, said, “The purpose of these mini-clinics is to provide more time for asthma patients. Instead of having a 10-minute consultation from the doctors or nurses, the mini-clinics would dedicate more time in treating them and educating the patients about several methods of prevention and treatment — especially educating the patients about asthma triggers, and how to avoid them.”

The mini-clinics would also provide support groups for asthma patients who sometimes needed counseling about their condition.

In addition, an experimental mini -clinic would open in the next two months at DHA’s existing health centre.

Dr Monsef said if the trial was successful, the mini-clinics would be available in all DHA health centres in Dubai.

As part of the campaign to raise awareness about respiratory illnesses, DHA recently set up an education centre at a shopping mall and offered lung tests to visitors.

Independent respiratory nurse specialist Jacqueline Brereton has been supporting the asthma awareness campaign and running a training program to educate nurses and doctors.

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) holds a campaign to educate people on asthma, in support of World Asthma Day which falls on May 4.

The campaign is developed and executed in close collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline, one of the leading companies in respiratory medicine.

The campaign which started on May 1, aims to educate asthma patients and the general public about asthma, its impact on lives and how it can be managed day-to-day.

“The impact on Asthma especially on young children drastically affects their quality of life because many of them cannot even attend school due to chronic asthma. The problem we face in the UAE is the lack of awareness about this condition,” stated  Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Saif Kalban, CEO of the Primary Healthcare Sector at the DHA.

“For many asthma patients, with the medical know-how we have today, there is no reason why hospitalization should happen unless under extreme circumstances. At times it can be as simple as understanding how best to use your inhaler where the role of the nurse becomes very important in this process,” added Dalia Ibrahim, respiratory marketing manager GSK.
