In a study by the International Obesity Task Force in Egypt, nearly 80 percent of women in Egypt are overweight and 46.6 percent obese. In addition, more than 25 percent of children aged 4 years are overweight.

In another study, the Diabetes Atlas survey, the incidence of diabetes in Egypt last year was 10.4 percent.

These issues were the focus of the recently held 13th congress of the Egyptian Society of Endocrinology and Obesity and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists at Hilton Green Plaza Hotel in Alexandria.

The ‘Nutritious and Delicious’ campaign by Tefal, a leading cookware and small appliance manufacturer, targeted journalists and health professionals in Egypt on the dangers of obesity leading to diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.

“Excess body fat is the largest nutritionally related problem in the world, excess intake of food (carbohydrate, protein and fat) can lead to obesity or at least the maintenance of an overweight body.”

“To a reasonable extent, body weight regulation depends on the balance between energy intake and energy expenditure, high-fat diets are more energy dense than high-carbohydrate diets, and the former favor hyperphagia (increased food intake) With high-fat diets, which are energy dense, more calories are passively ingested than with high-carbohydrate foods,” Dr Ayesh said.

“To prevent obesity a complete change of lifestyle is necessary where one strives to achieve a balanced diet and where moderation and healthy food choices are the keys to good health,” Dr Ayesh stressed.

She also underlined that obesity remains one of the several chronic diseases that have been implicated or linked to dietary and lifestyle factors. Those who are obese are more likely to suffer from life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Nathalie Haddad, product manager, Groupe SEB MEA, Indian sub continent, French overseas territories presented Tefal’s new range of products: Nutricook, Actifry and Vitacuisine.

This revolutionary fryer can cook one kilo of French fries with only one spoonful of oil, using an innovative technology, a statement said.

Haddad concluded that Tefal, the French inventor of non-stick pots and pans and manufacturer of ingenious small household appliances invests in R&D to come up with innovations in household products that people use every day.

Qatar enters into stem cell research and will focus on diabetes at the outset, which brings a glimmer of hope to diabetics because more than 15 percent of the population are suffering from diabetes.

“Our focus in Qatar is to have innovative research for the benefit of the world. Stem cell therapy is one such area which promises a bright future for man,” said Dr Abdel Haoudi, Vice President, Research Division, Qatar Foundation Stem cells are the most basic cells and are characterized by the unique property to reproduce quickly and indefinitely, and their potential to become any cell-type of the body. These cells are simply waiting for “instructions” to be programmed into one tissue or another. Hence the cells have a potential of treating a number of diseases.

“As a priority, the research in Qatar will be looking at application of stem cells in diabetes. There is potential in stem cells to replace some of the defective cells which are the root cause of diabetes. We will use stem cell research to find how it can be done and then soon translate it for medical applications,” he told The Peninsula.

With diabetes being the first step into the research, QF has started training a number of potential Qatari students and researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Cambridge.

“The institute is one of the leading ones working on applications of stem cells in diabetes. Once the training is complete the young researchers will return and continue studies on the subject.”

During the 2nd Middle East Diabetes Summit, the experts said that diabetics cannot regulate their blood sugar levels, which leads to organ and limb damage.

These uncontrolled glucose levels cause diseases in the limbs that often end with total amputation, they explained.

Worldwide, 300 million people are currently living with diabetes, and this figure is expected to increase unless there is a global prevention plan, Andrew Bolton, vice president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, told reporters yesterday.

“Diabetes is the global epidemic of the 21st century, and this is the first time that a noncommunicable disease is being classified as a major epidemic by the World Health Organization,” he said.

He stressed the need for governments, the media and individuals around the world to adopt a preventative approach that aims at changing lifestyles before diabetes develops.

He noted that diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disorders and diseases of the nervous system.

Around three million Jordanians are expected to be affected by diabetes in 2050 unless serious steps are taken, National Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetics Director General Kamel Ajlouni said in a previous statement.

The first joint meeting between the Emirates Cardiac Society and the American College of Cardiology formed the basis of the growing incidence of heart diseases, which is ranked as the number one cause of death in the Gulf States.

Recent studies show that more than half of the population in the Gulf states suffers from abnormal cholesterol levels, a quarter has high blood pressure and 15 -25 per cent have diabetes. These numbers coupled with a rapid increase in the rate of obesity adds up to alarming statistics.

The joint meeting hosted several distinguished doctors from the region and from the American College of Cardiology who delivered a series of informative lectures about various aspects of cardiovascular health.

The meeting began with the AstraZeneca Satellite Symposium. The topics discussed the “CEPHEUS” research project and the future of cardiovascular disease prevention.

“CEPHEUS” is a large research program involving 5,300 patients across the Gulf who are currently treated for high cholesterol levels. The project was launched last November by the Emirates Cardiac Society in collaboration with AstraZeneca, an Anglo/Swedish biopharmaceutical company, which was also the part sponsor of the joint meeting. The main aim of this project is to monitor the percentage of patients who reach their cholesterol level treatment goal while taking cholesterol lowering medications.

“We are keen to facilitate joint initiatives between professional organizations and believe that exchange of knowledge is key to improving the quality of cardiac care,” said Tarek Rabah, President of AstraZeneca Gulf.

Dr. Anthony N. DeMaria, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology stressed on the increasing burden of heart diseases worldwide. “In India, more people are dying from atherosclerosis of heart disease than of infectious diseases,” he pointed out.

There were also sessions on cardiac infarction and treatment, cholesterol management guidelines and general cardiology conducted as part of the meeting.

The fourth and last phase of Dubai Municipality’s public health campaign under the slogan “Together for a healthier lifestyle” was held in the jogging track of Jumeirah Open Beach recently.

The campaign addressed weighty matters like obesity and related diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure. Free check ups and consultations were offered by the medical staff of the Clinic and Medical Services Section of the Public Health Services Department of the Municipality in collaboration with doctors and specialists from outside the Municipality. Doctors advised the public on the benefits of walking regularly during the campaign, which was supported by Almarai.

The campaign was mainly organized to create awareness among the public on the diseases resulting from the pressure of modern life, and promote the health services provided by the Municipality as well as promoting the walking tracks and increasing the number of visitors to these facilities.

Besides, the campaign was aimed at establishing an initial database on the types and levels of chronic diseases among the members of the community, and having a positive interaction with them to understand their needs regarding Municipality services, in addition to conducting tests for sugar, pressure, cholesterol, Body Mass Index, and to provide medical advice.

During the first phase of the campaign at Al Khawaneej a total of 150 people participated, 90 men and 60 women. Out of these 80% people were practicing walking and some men were also playing football. The tests conducted during the campaign revealed that 20 people (13.3%) were having high blood pressure and 28 people (18.6%) were reported with high blood sugar and 60 people (40%) with high cholesterol.

The second phase of the campaign held at Safa Park saw the participation of 211 people, 78% men and 21% women. Out of these 75% people were found to be practicing walking. The tests conducted among the participants revealed that 20% were having high cholesterol, 14% people with high blood sugar and about 19% with high blood pressure.

The third phase the campaign at Al Mamzar Park has resulted 311 practitioners, 236 males and 65 females. Out of these 234 people were found to be practicing walking, 124 people were found having high blood pressure and 131 people with high blood sugar.

The Saudi Gulf Company for Basic Industries has signed two contracts with German-based Linde Engineering to manufacture insulin and blood plasma.

The contracts were inked in Riyadh whereby Linde will prepare detailed engineering designs for the process establishing two factories in Riyadh.

Manufacturing of the expensive and vital drug, insulin will be produced on commercial scale to fulfill the requirements of diabetes patients in Saudi Arabia and the rest of the region.

Moreover, production of human blood plasma will provide a variety of ingredients for medical purposes.

The two pioneering projects in the Arab and Muslim world will produce insulin and blood plasma as per the European and American standards.

School Health Services (SHS), in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC); will be leading “Diabetes Awareness Campaign” at 17 schools in Abu Dhabi City, Al Ain & Western Region. The campaign is created to bring about awareness of Diabetes among school children.

Dr. Sumaya Marzouqi, Manager of School Health Services, said; “At AHS – School Health Services (SHS), we believe in educating the children, who are the future citizens of the world about Diabetes, which is the key healthcare concern worldwide. This campaign will raise awareness in order to promote a healthy lifestyle and habits, thereby preventing the spread of this disease in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Another aspect that this campaign will address is the prevalence of Diabetes among students.”

The schedule for the “Diabetes Awareness Campaign” will be the same at all the respective schools, which aims to increase the awareness of diabetic among students, their families and the community by educating them about the causes, prevention, treatment, and daily life activities of diabetic students.

Dubai A pharmaceutical company has sought to allay fears of some diabetes patients who came forward with complaints that a pill they are taking is not fully assimilated by the body and could be a fake.

Fatima, a diabetic patient, had voiced apprehensions about the tablet, Glucophage XR (500mg), saying it had shown up virtually unchanged in her stool. She said some other patients who were taking the tablet had failed to notice this until she pointed it out to them.

Fatima said she worried about what would happen if the tablet were to remain inside the body and how it would affect internal organs.

Pharmaceutical company Merck Serono said in a statement that Glucophage XR is an advanced formulation of the oral anti-diabetic agent Metformin.

“When the tablet is swallowed, it absorbs water, swells and remains for a longer period of time in the stomach, releasing Metformin slowly into the upper part of the intestine. This is sufficient to allow for once daily dosage rather than 2 to 3 times daily intakes required for the immediate release [of] formulations of Metformin, making it more convenient for the patients,” it said. “With this advanced tablet technology, it is normal that remains of the tablet can show up in the patients’ stool the morning after the ingestion of the tablet and therefore patients and medical practitioners should be reassured.”

In clinical trials with more than 1,200 patients, Glucophage XR was shown to be comparable to Glucophage in lowering patients’ blood sugar levels. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the US also approved Glucophage XR for use by patients who require combination therapy with Sulfonylureas or insulin, it said.
