In order to cut costs for the diabetic patients and ensure proper care, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has launched a new treatment package. For Emiratis the package is free, while for foreign the cost will be considerably cheaper. A senior doctor mentioned “Patients will be distributed glucose testing devices to check their blood sugar levels at home. The device and strips will be given at a third of the market cost”.
“The package will make sure that diabetics are being taken care of according to international standards and guidelines. The package is available at all the 13 Public Healthcare Centers (PHCs) across Dubai” said Dr Mohammad Farghaly, head of acute and chronic care. Furthermore, Dr Kalban said “The three-year screening of Dubai residents will end this year and results will show how best to deal with the diabetes epidemic. The number of people affected by the debilitating disease is increasing and now reportedly affects 24 per cent of the UAE population”.
On Tuesday night, the first medical charity center will be launched by Minister of Social Affairs Yousuf Al-Othaimeen in Makkah in order to serve poor people suffering from chronic diseases.This center belongs to the Shifa charity organization.
Dr. Khalid Taib, chairman of Shifa, thanked the minister for attending the opening ceremony which presents a huge progress in the charity and volunteering sectors. He said “Many poor patients need care and attention. They need support and financial aid and it is for this reason we started this initiative. A major section is for diabetic patients which work on providing awareness programs and different treatments that could reduce the side effects of diabetes. It also provides medicines and medical equipment. It has a number of clinics devoted to children, youths and the elderly and introduces them to medical and diet programs”.
Specialists provide special care to the feet of diabetics to ensure there is no need for amputations, which combine increasing complications. There are also regular eye, heart and blood pressure checkups for diabetics in the center. Taib explained that there is a rehabilitation center for children and the elderly equipped with different sports machines to help strengthen muscles.
Treating several illnesses units like the joints, rheumatology and osteoporosis are involved in the center in addition to an available dental clinic. A specialized section for training and organizing medical seminars and research is included in addition to a charity pharmacy and laboratory.
