Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) received a delegation from King Hussein Cancer Center – Jordan, and Jordan Breast Cancer Program to its Khalifa (A) Healthcare Center.

The visit aims to provide insights on the center’s diagnosis and detection facilities, was recommended by HAAD. It provided an opportunity for the delegation members to learn more about the center’s services including specialized clinics for early detection of cancer as well as promote the exchange of experiences and cooperation between Jordan and the UAE in the fight against cancer.

Dr. Wegdan ِAbdul Razzaq, Health Operations Supervisor of Khalifa (A) spoke about the achievements and developments made at Khalifa (A) since the launch and also the plans for the future as well as the progress in achieving the same. He also provided the delegation a familiarization tour of the center’s facilities, equipment, service sections and technology.

Dr. John Evangelista, Director of AHS, said: “We, at AHS, are truly delighted on the recommendation of our Khalifa (A) Healthcare Centre by the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD) to host the delegation from Jordan. This further confirms the success of our continuous efforts to provide the highest standards of healthcare across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.”

Breast Cancer is a key concern of the healthcare sector in Abu Dhabi, since it is one of the most common types of cancers prevalent in the Gulf region and the UAE among women, accounting for approximately 28% of cases.

Furthermore, Dr. Mahmoud Sarhan, Chairman of King Hussein Cancer CenterKing Hussein Cancer Center – Jordan, added: “Our visit to the AHS Khalifa (A) Healthcare Center undoubtedly plays an important role in enhancing cooperation between the UAE and Jordan. HAAD issued fines ranging from AED 10,000 to AED 20,000 per violation to clinics, pharmacies, [...]]]>

The Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD) announced that 38 health insurance violation cases, including suspected cases of fraud, forgery and abuse had been uncovered during inspection visits conducted by the Audit Section of the Health Insurance Regulation Department at HAAD.

HAAD issued fines ranging from AED 10,000 to AED 20,000 per violation to clinics, pharmacies, and medical professionals. Violations included claiming for medical services not provided to patients, replacement of prescription medications with non prescribed drugs, medical and non medical consumables, and non medical items. A further violation included employers and/or sponsors not providing continuous health insurance coverage to their sponsored employees who are working and/or residing in the Emirate.

In addition, HAAD referred certain violations to the Abu Dhabi misdemeanor court, which issued a decision to fine Dr. B.K. in M.D. clinic the amount of AED 10000 for receiving the value of treatment services that were not provided to the patient and forging documents. The court also sentenced two defendants for a period of two months imprisonment followed by deportation from the country for the issuance of forged health insurance cards. The court also ordered destruction of the forged cards as a result of their fraudulent acts against insurance companies in order to issue health insurance cards based on forged documents.

Company I.A.I. was fined AED 90,000 and company M.N were fined AED 70,000 by HAAD for underwriting health insurance policies which cover less medical services than is mandatory under the policies, non-compliance with health insurance policies, non-compliance with the policies terms and conditions, For non-adherence with health insurance basic product rates approved by HAAD, making changes to these health insurance policies, providing false and misleading information when applying for a license, and for non-compliance with the rules & principles in marketing health insurance policies.

HAAD also decided not to renew the license of a Third Party Administrator M. N. due to repetitive irregularities & violations such as working in areas beyond the granted license, the existence of conflict of interest between the company and providers of health care services and violation of undertaking made by the company when applied for license and practicing activities not licensed for in the field of Health Insurance Scheme.

A senior official at the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) called for the introduction of cost-effective drugs across Abu Dhabi through a strategy that does not compromise patient safety.

The usage of pharmaceutical products in the UAE has grown at a rate of 21 per cent per annum above the world average.

Ten key health regulators from eight Middle East and North Africa (Mena) countries, World Health Organization (WHO) delegates, and 20 pharmaceutical companies took part in the two-day conference.

The conference discussed the need to establish a Middle East Generic Association (Mega) to support the use of cost effective medicines without compromising the safety of patients.

According to Dr Al Khair, the association is expected to function as a common platform among regulatory bodies and the pharmaceutical industry across the Mena region. It will help ensure sustainable health care.

The total revenue from drug sales across the UAE stands at $1.2 billion a year (Dh4.4 billion), the HAAD official said, adding that 25 per cent of this was from sale of generic drugs, known as generics in short.

Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) announced plans to open an office in Madinat Zayed to provide services in the Western Region.

H.E. Dr. Ahmed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Chairman of HAAD, said: “Demand for high quality health services in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is growing quickly. In line with the government’s strategy to improve healthcare, HAAD has recognized the need to extend its services throughout the Emirate. HAAD has set ambitious priorities for executing health system reform within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.”

Now, Al Ain Office is providing services by the three divisions of HAAD: Health Regulation via Facilities Licensing Department, Health Compliance via Health Audit Section and the Public Health & Policy via Health Promotion, Births and Deaths registration Section, Communicable Diseases Section and Occupational Health Section.

Abu Dhabi Authorities have been urged to implement measures to ensure that the number of cases involving children suffering from diabetes in the country does not continue to rise.

Omniyat Al Hajiri, a consultant in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (Haad), said “Currently, children make up 10 per cent of the total number of people who suffer from diabetes and we have to take measures to ensure that this doesn’t continue to [be the case].”

“However, there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration, such as how the population here will respond to the medication as well as some of the treatment methods.”

Further, an awareness programme targeting pre-school children, some as young as four years old, had been launched to this effect.

The Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HA-AD), the regulatory body of the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA), to improve standards and practices of information security and safeguard the IT infrastructure at the Authority against cyber crime.

The MOU was signed by H.E. Engineer Zaid Al Siksek, CEO of HAAD and H.E. Mohammed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of Telecommunications Regularity Authority and duly authorized signatory for and on behalf of the Computer Emergency and Response Team (aeCERT), during the International Security National Resilience (ISNR) Exhibition and Conference held from 1 – 3 March at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Under the memorandum, the Computer Emergency Response Team (aeCERT) is to provide HAAD with guidance, education, and awareness on the risks and breaches of the Internet; provide advice on communications systems; information security and control; respond to emergencies and crises; in addition to providing research and analysis on information security. H.E. Engineer Zaid Al Siksek, CEO of HAAD said: “Better control over elements of information security and protection of our database is among the most important priorities in HAAD, with the help of aeCERT we will guarantee our business continuity and information security. This MOU fulfills our commitment to Abu Dhabi’s government information security initiative.” “Security, privacy and confidentiality of data and information serves the interest of all our customers, partners and investors, and is a step to accountable, credible and efficient business dealings for the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi”, he added. HE Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of TRA emphasized the importance of working on creating a safe and well secured national digital infrastructure that is protected against all kinds of cyber attacks and possible threats be it targeted at its ICT infrastructure or at the security of electronically saved data and information. In doing so, TRA employs latest technologies and best practices in the field. He added that “this MoU will allow the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi to benefit from the services offered by the aeCERT in the fields of guidance, education, and awareness, surveillance assistant in addition to research and analysis of current situation and future threats related to cyber security”. The MOU does not specify a time frame of this cooperation and does not impose any contractual obligations on the parties, but it opens the door for further cooperation in the future.

Officials from the Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA’s) health regulation sector met with members of the Health Authority Abu Dhabi’s (HAAD’s) health regulation team to discuss ways to boost joint cooperation between the two authorities.

The meeting which took place recently discussed ways to develop a framework for joint cooperation so as to help raise the standard of healthcare provided in the two Emirates-Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The two authorities discussed ways to facilitate licensing procedures for healthcare professionals in both the Emirates. The meeting discussed several issues from professional licensing to procedures for professional assessment as well as electronic assessment for healthcare practitioners.

Dr. Ali Obaid Al Ali, Director, Health Regulation, HAAD provided an overview of the role played by HAAD to regulate the health sector and improve the quality of medical services provided in Abu Dhabi.

The two authorities agreed to cooperate on several regulatory issues including a shared assessment committee for certain specialties like neonatology.

They discussed policies and procedures to deal with medical negligence as well as methods to detect violators and fine them.

They also discussed ways to develop and strengthen their inspection procedures.

The two authorities will sign a MoU highlighting the framework of their joint cooperation.

On account of climate change and as the country moves into the winter season, Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) issued on Monday a health guidance for the public regarding the quality of  indoor air.

The guidelines provide information on how to maintain air purity and avoid pollutants which have a significant impact on human health.

“People spend about 90 per cent of their time indoors, yet when asked about air pollution, most people would raise concerns about outdoor air pollution sources such as dust storms, vehicle emissions and industrial sources,” said Dr Oliver Harrison, head of Public Health and Policy at HAAD.

“The quality of indoor air is equally important. Recent research has shown that the quality of indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than that of outdoor air.”

He noted that studies indicate that most modern buildings are built to be energy efficient and do not allow adequate air exchange to reduce concentrations of indoor air pollutants.

“It is therefore helpful to allow fresh outdoor air to circulate through the interior of buildings where a variety of air contaminants may have accumulated,” Harrison said and suggested that the best way to improve indoor air quality is to open windows for 15-30 minutes (unless there is a dust storm) and to perform regular maintenance of air vents. According to HAAD’s guidance, the most significant signs of indoor air quality problems include unusual and noticeable odours, stale or stuffy air, dirty or faulty central heating or air conditioning equipment, dirty or clogged vents, presence of mould and mildew, and frequent headaches or allergy symptoms.

There are several contaminants that can be found in almost any home that contribute to poor indoor quality and they include smoke from tobacco products; insect or rodent droppings and pesticides.  Other contaminants include asbestos, found in old homes, and lead from lead-based paint dust created when removing paint by sanding, scraping or burning. The authority guidelines said it was imperative that air conditioner ducts are maintained annually.
