A mobile clinic will be operating by the Saudi Diabetes and Endocrine Association (SDEA) in East Province next year to detect diabetes. “Worldwide people especially Arab countries are suffering from diabetes and its complications. Most suffering people are in Saudi Arabia” said Abdul Aziz Al-Turki, SDEA’s chairman.

He also commented “During this year, the number of diabetes patients becoming over 285 million patients and there will be a rapid increase until 2030″ Al-Turki expressed his concerns about these numbers. He added that “Humans can protect themselves from this disease with considering Health education that encourage them to eat healthy food, practice sports and avoid smoking”.

A diabetes awareness campaign was recently announced by Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Mulhem, chairman of the SDEA Scientific Committee and director of the association’s. He said “Some of the highest rates of diabetes are located in Cooperation Council (GCC) countries so that the campaign will continue for five years”.

The chance of having diabetes can be limited by 70 to 90 percent with following a healthy lifestyle, mentioned Dr. Basem Futa, the association’s chairman of its Health Education Committee. He is worried about the increasing obesity in children noting that there are three million obese children in the Kingdom.

Free medical test initiative in Sharjah was released on Tuesday by the Ministry of Health. The tests will be made on a mobile clinic will move from Dubai and then to Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Mahmoud Fikri, Executive Director for Health Policies at the Ministry of Health and Chairman of the Higher National Committee for Diabetes, said “The first round of the diabetes bus tour will make about 5,000 early diabetes screening tests … in the three emirates,”.The mobile clinic which is backed up by the minister of Health, Dr Hanif Hassan Al Qassim, is cited next to Sharjah Cooperative Society in the Halwan area and will stay there till November 19. And it will be in Dubai from November 23 to December 6, then in Abu Dhabi from December 20 to January 4, 2011.

The tour has been enacted by the cooperation between the ministry of health and NovoNordsk, Esteno Diabetes Center, Sharjah Cooperative Association, and the Diabetes Friendly Association.

Dr Fikri said, “Researches and studies have shown that diabetes is increasing enormously in the UAE. The diabetes bus was launched to mark World Diabetes Day on November 14 [Sunday], and aims to raise the awareness of the community members with the disease,”He stressed that the medical tests will be for free to all the visitors in a way to increase the preventive medicine programs beside the role of the private sector and societal partnerships to help combat diseases.

A highly equipped car will accompany the tour which will be opened from 5pm to 11pm on weekdays.Dr Fikri added “The diabetes bus tour has previously achieved great results in raising the awareness of the society to get screened for early diabetes,”.

A mobile diabetic clinic will soon be set up in Eastern Province to provide services to local communities, such as blood sugar level checkup and other medical examinations associated with the treatment and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and endocrine diseases.

The mobile clinic is a project of the Saudi Diabetes & Endocrine Association (SDEA), and is aimed to encourage citizens and the expatriate communities to submit themselves for examination of their sugar level and receive advices on the management and treatment, according to Dr. Basem Futa, director of the SDEA information committee.

“The mobile clinic will be managed by a medical team and will be visiting specific areas to be indicated by diabetic clubs, charitable societies, and community organizations,” Futa said.

He said the mobile clinic will also carry a mini-library and will serve as focal point for distributing educational materials on diabetes awareness.

SDEA is increasing its awareness campaign on diabetes and endocrine diseases this year, according to Futa.

“We will continue working with diabetic clubs, forums and societies within the Eastern Province and at the Kingdom-wide level, and increase our educational programs in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, women Societies, social centers, sport clubs and other community groups,” Futa said.

SDEA will also continue its cooperation with the International Diabetic Federation and the American Diabetes Association on conducting scientific meetings and conference in Saudi Arabia, according to Futa.

SDEA conducted 15 scientific conferences, lectures and workshops in 2009. The association also developed 20 educational leaflets on diabetes, nutrition, obesity, healthy shopping, foot care, dental care, etc.

For two weeks, a team of medical experts from DHCC’s facilities, including Imperial Healthcare Institute, Medicentres International, Magrabi Eye Hospital and Boston Institute for Dental Research and Education, will offer general health checks, consultations, eye and dental screenings.

Dubai Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), a member of Tecom Investments and the world’s first healthcare free zone, will officially launch its mobile clinic out-reach initiative today in partnership with Unilever.

The mobile clinic has been designed to increase health awareness and engagement for male and female labourers in Dubai.

For two weeks, a team of medical experts from DHCC’s facilities, including Imperial Healthcare Institute, Medicentres International, Magrabi Eye Hospital and Boston Institute for Dental Research and Education, will offer general health checks, consultations, eye and dental screenings.

The clinic is being launched in the lead-up to DHCC’s two-day community Health Festival on November 6-7.

The festival will take place from 1-9pm in District 1, Dubai Healthcare City.
