Philips Launches A Wall of Light to Lessen the Tension

Philips Electronics launched an LED-based wall of light designed with a holistic approach in order to lessen the tension, anxiety and stress young patients typically feel when entering a hospital environment.

The Imagination Light Canvas is a light wall, 3 metres by 1.5 metres, and is simply operated via a standard PC giving staff the flexibility to select from a menu of interactive and static scenes.

Deliberately positioned opposite the main entrance to the renal unit’s reception area, it is the first thing that visitors see on arrival, thereby creating immediate distraction, interest and curiosity.

“Going into hospital for treatment brings out worry and concern in most people never mind in the young children we deal with,” said Derick Harrison, capital project manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“Therefore, we wanted to create an environment which is uplifting, far removed from the clinical, sterile atmosphere usually associated with hospitals,” he added.

Children cannot help but be drawn to it engaging with the vibrant, ever changing shapes as they dart and dance across the screen.

Eye-catching for youngsters coming to the unit for the first time, the Light Canvas also offers welcome entertainment for patients who have to be kept on the ward for any length of time.

The programme options even include the potential to create simple games so that two or more children can play together. Kidney disease is incredibly disruptive to daily life and visits to hospital can seem endless, therefore, having the opportunity to play and have fun is a welcome relief for children, and of course their concerned parents.

Biocartis Acquires Philips Technology Platform

Biocartis, molecular diagnostics company, said it has signed an agreement with Royal Philips Electronics to acquire its technology platform for rapid fully-automated DNA/RNA molecular diagnostic testing.

The platform has been designed for applications in a wide range of patient sample testing, including oncology and infectious diseases.

Biocartis said under the deal it will develop and commercialize the platform, together with a menu of tests, through strategic partnerships and finalize validation of the platform at its newly-established and wholly-owned Dutch subsidiary Biocartis BV.

The company however refused to disclose any financial details of the agreement.

Biocartis BV is based on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, where it will benefit from close access to the multi-disciplinary R&D facilities and services of Philips Corporate Technologies.

“This agreement is transformational for Biocartis as it accelerates our plans to bring innovative and cost-effective molecular diagnostic solutions that can turn personalized medicine into practice,” said Rudi Pauwels, CEO of Biocartis.

Under the terms of the agreement, all platform-related assets, including the relevant Philips patents and technology know-how, plus a number of existing Philips staff members, will be transferred to Biocartis.

“From our inception, we have been on a quest to integrate a clinical sample preparation and processing technology to complement our own developments. The platform developed by Philips clearly stood out as an impressive, integrated solution in terms of architecture choices, functionality, flexibility and bears the signature of a world-class engineering team,” he added.

“We are extremely pleased that in Biocartis we have found a highly innovative and entrepreneurial partner that is committed to bringing a cutting-edge molecular diagnostics platform to market based on advanced technology developed by Philips,” said Gottfried Dutiné, executive vice president of Philips and global head of Markets & Innovation.

“Biocartis’ vision of the future of molecular diagnostics, the technologies they have developed within the space of a few years and the proven track record of its key management in the pharmaceutical and diagnostic sector have convinced us of the value of this agreement.”

To make effective use of existing and new DNA/RNA biomarkers and to fully realize the potential of personalized medicine, new solutions are needed to make the required tests more widely available. This will be the focus of Biocartis.

At the same time, it will be essential to integrate, analyze and present all the available patient data in an intelligent way.

Philips will focus its research program in this area on the integration of molecular diagnostic information into clinical decision support systems with the objective to help clinicians to arrive at the correct diagnosis and choice of therapy.

Through its ongoing technical collaboration with Biocartis, Philips will remain closely involved with technology innovation in this field, contributing to the development of optimized clinical informatics solutions that address the needs of both patients and care providers, Dutine added.

Solution For Mobile Breast Cancer Screening

Smit Mobile Equipment is part of the Oshkosh Corporation and is a leader in mobile medical diagnostic units, mobile hospitals and mobile clinics. The vehicle (Mobile Mammography Screening Unit) will be showcased at the upcoming Arab Health 2010 show.

Philips to Develop Handheld Diagnostic Solutions

Royal Philips Electronics said it has partnered with bioMérieux to develop fully automated handheld diagnostic testing solutions for hospital use that can be deployed at the point-of-care (close to the patient).

The collaboration aims to improve diagnosis and management of disease in critical care settings within hospitals (for example, Emergency Departments, Coronary Units and Intensive Care Units (ICUs)), said a top Philips official.

‘Philips is convinced that point-of-care testing in hospital critical care settings will play a major part in improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs,’ said Steve Rusckowski, executive vice president and chief executive officer, Philips Healthcare.

‘It is an excellent fit with our leading market position in critical care settings and our holistic care cycle approach to, for example, cardiac care,’ he explained.

“Their combined knowledge of medical technology, biomarker assays and clinical workflows, coupled with their joint understanding of the relevant markets, stakeholders and channels, puts Philips and bioMérieux in a commanding position to drive forward a paradigm change in critical care decision-making,” he added.

“We are very pleased to be partnering with Philips, which has a strong tradition in innovating patient care, and our collaboration will result in superb products able to rapidly deliver high medical value results to clinicians,” said Stéphane Bancel, bioMérieux chief executive officer.

“We will be leveraging the strong synergies between our Vidas biology expertise and Philips’ unique engineering and technology capabilities. This new point-of-care testing device will allow us to enter a market that is growing at about 10 per cent a year,” he said.

This new alliance unites Philips’ existing strengths in medical technology, patient monitoring and healthcare IT, including solutions aimed at helping clinicians to make more informed decisions, with bioMérieux’s expertise in the development of biological assays and its extensive knowledge of cardiovascular and infectious disease markers.

‘A product development program is underway and the first milestone is expected in 2010. As part of the agreement, bioMérieux will have access to Philips’ proprietary Magnotech technology for hospital-based point-of-care testing applications,’ he noted.

Commercial solutions resulting from the partnership will be co-branded by Philips and bioMérieux, with bioMérieux being the exclusive distributor worldwide. The two companies intend to have products on the market by 2013.

Philips Introduces Intelligent Sleep Therapy System

Royal Philips Electronics will host a scientific day called the ‘First Gulf Sleep Apnea Meeting’ on the 10th of December, inviting sleep medicine doctors from around the Gulf and Middle East to discuss the latest developments and practices in sleep medicine, as well as calling for broad education on Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

During the scientific day, Philips will also demonstrate the new Philips Respironics Sleep Therapy System that treats Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This new system is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) solution with intelligent technology that simplifies patient management by treating instead of monitoring patients and recognizing when therapy needs are changing, while offering sophisticated comfort enhancements.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is one of the most common sleep disorders worldwide. It is a condition that causes a person’s breathing to stop repeatedly during the night, causing disruption in their sleep as they struggle to breathe. As a result, they never get the deep, restorative sleep that is needed. OSA can not only negatively impact a person’s overall quality of life and productivity, but it can also potentially lead to serious health issues, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, strokes and other conditions.

The vast majority of people fail to seek medical diagnosis for sleep disordered breathing. Individuals with moderate to severe OSA often have a number of symptoms including loud, disruptive snoring, gasping for air or choking during sleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness. However, only a fraction of such people have been diagnosed. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing, affecting approximately 2% of women and 4% of men (1).

Once OSA is diagnosed as the cause of a patient’s complaints and symptoms, it usually can be effectively treated with CPAP therapy, a non-invasive approach which is the standard treatment of choice for OSA. CPAP provides a gentle flow of air pressure through the nasal passage using a mask, preventing airway collapse to allow an OSA patient to breathe freely during sleep. The CPAP device is equipped with various features to increase patient comfort during therapy.

Philips Advances Research on Hybrid PETMR Scanner

Royal Philips Electronics announced that the project has achieved a major milestone in its ambitious plan to create a new medical imaging technique called hybrid PET/MR. This new technique is based on the simultaneous acquisition of time-of-flight Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) images.

The project involves eight partners from six European countries and has a total budget of around EUR 7 million. The ultimate goals of the project are to advance the accuracy of diagnostic imaging in cardiology and oncology and open up new fields in therapy planning, guidance and response monitoring.

A hybrid PET/MR scanner could simultaneously deliver the anatomical and functional information achievable using state-of-the-art MR scanners (e.g. soft tissue contrast and physiological processes in blood vessels) and the molecular imaging information provided by PET. As a result, it would combine the best of both worlds, which could ultimately help to pinpoint and characterize disease sites within the body more accurately than is currently possible.

For a hybrid scanner that offers simultaneous PET and MR image acquisition, two fundamental problems need to be solved: the development of MR-compatible PET detectors and a method of accounting for PET attenuation (the scattering of high-energy gamma rays generated by the PET tracers by parts of the human body).

The milestone that the HYPERImage team has reached is the development of a functional gamma-ray detector that meets the performance requirements of the latest time-of-flight PET scanners. The new gamma-ray detectors have been designed to be compatible with the strong static and dynamic magnetic fields that would be present in a combined PET/MR scanner. Furthermore, the team has achieved major progress with respect to MRI-based static and dynamic PET attenuation correction.

“Understanding the molecular mechanisms associated with cardiovascular disease and cancer, and the development of technologies focused on the early detection of these disease processes are the two main challenges of biomedical research,” said Prof. Dr. Valentin Fuster, Director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research in Madrid (one of Europe’s leading research centers in cardiology) and the Cardiovascular Institute at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. “I am convinced that the realization of a PET/MR technology platform will significantly help to improve the precision and the moment at which disease is diagnosed, two critical parameters for the successful treatment of many diseases.”

“The HYPERImage team’s combined expertise in semiconductor physics, signal processing and medical scanner design, together with its expert clinical knowledge, have moved the project an important step forward in the development of a new imaging tool that is intended to help clinicians diagnose and treat some of the world’s most prevalent killer diseases, such as breast cancer,” says Henk van Houten, senior vice president of Philips Research and head of Philips’ healthcare research program. “I am proud to say that proof-of-concept of an MR-compatible PET detector took the team less than 1.5 years to achieve. It clearly demonstrates that good collaborations lead to very fast progress.”

EU funding for the HYPERImage project, which is being provided as part of the EU’s 7th Framework Program, amounts to around EUR 5 million. The consortium partners will provide an additional EUR 2.3 million. The project started in 2008 and will run for three years.
