The third Emirates Physiotherapy Conference – Physio Dubai 2010 – will be held from March 28 to 30 at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel.

The event is organized by the Emirates Physiotherapy Society, it will host internationally renowned researchers, educators, clinicians and practitioners in physiotherapy, orthopaedics, neurosciences, paediatrics and rehabilitation medicine.

The conference will highlight the role of multidisciplinary approach in physiotherapy while providing physiotherapists in the UAE with an interactive forum to share updates on their practice and expand their learning networks across the world.

“Physio Dubai 2010 aims to fill the gap between practice and research and more importantly, underscore the importance of evidence-based practice,” said Abdul Adheem Kamkar, chairman of the Emirates Physiotherapy Society and Physio Dubai 2010.

“Leading physiotherapists, physicians and surgeons from the UAE will join the panel of experts at Physio Dubai 2010 to present the latest evidence in spine and knee treatment, pediatric neurology, exercise prescription for aging adults, sports medicine and use of real-time ultrasound in rehabilitation,” added Amal Al Shamlan, chairperson of the scientific committee of the conference.

The establishment of full-fledged physiotherapy and rehabilitation departments at all regional hospitals is currently under way, said Mohammed Hassan Ali, Under-Secretary, Planning Affairs, Ministry of Health. He was speaking at the two-day 2nd Physical Medicine Symposium on “Prevention and Early Intervention” which began here yesterday.

Ali said the symposium, organised by Khoula Hospital, assumes importance in that it includes four workshops and provides a forum for the sharing of ideas, presentation of research findings, and discussion of professional issues relevant to the practice of physiotherapy. The four workshops will focus on Musculoskeletal Shoulder, Musculoskeletal Spine, General Rehabilitation and Advanced Assistive devices.

He said the aim of the symposium is “refreshment of knowledge and skills in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, upgrading of skills, advancement of treatment based on evidence-based practice particularly in prevention and intervention, exchange and sharing knowledge and skills, and opportunity for hands on experience in the workshop to improve treatment skills.”

The Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA), publishers of the Oman Observer and its sister Arabic daily Oman, is the media sponsor of this symposium. The symposium has brought together Omani and foreign physiotherapists to discuss and share cutting-edge solutions and methods in their field.

Highlights of the symposium on the first day included a welcome address by Salim Khalaf al Harthy, Head of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department, Khoula Hospital, keynote address by Dr Guy Zito of Australia on “Physiotherapy differential diagnosis in lumbo-sacral region,” Dr Masoud al Riyami, Senior Orthopaedic surgeon and consultant, Khoula Hospital, on “Common Shoulder Injuries in Athletes” among other experts.

Salim Khalaf al Harthy said the symposium has been accredited by Oman Medical Speciality Board. The first day participants will get six credit points and workshop participants on the second day will get four credit points for each workshop they attend. The symposium includes speakers from Australia, Turkey, UK and India, in addition to 11 presentations from Omani experts.
