Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) managed by Cleveland Clinic hosted the Music and Medicine Concert Lecture today March 29, at 1:30 pm in cooperation with Cleveland Clinic Arts and Medicine Institute and Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF). More than 60 patients, visitors and doctors attended the event which took place in SKMC is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The goal of hosting the Music and Medicine Concert at SKMC is to bring the arts and music to the bedside which assists in the healing process. Dr. Tej Maini, CEO of SKMC’s patients and visitors. Studies have shown that music has positively impacted health and wellness throughout time and across cultures.”

“Our patient population at SKMC is multicultural; we receive patients from more than 60 different nationalities”, Dr. Maini added. “Last year’s concert was successful; our patients have enjoyed it and benefited from it, and we intend to present this annually in corporation with the Arts and Medicine Institute of Cleveland Clinic and ADMAF.”

Kamal Chémali, M.D., Cleveland Clinic physician and a course director of the Concert-Symposium said, “Cleveland Clinic believes that healing should begin the moment a patient walks through our doors. New research shows that the arts are good medicine – providing comfort, elevating the spirit, and affirming life and hope. When used as a therapy, music can provide pain relief and reduce anxiety. The arts, when combined with outstanding patient care, create an environment that encourages healing”.

“The healing, nurturing effects of music and art cannot be overestimated. Through events such as the Music and Medicine Concert Lecture at the Abu Dhabi Festival, we can see for ourselves the happiness, comfort and reassurance music brings to those who are in pain or distress,” said H.E. Hoda Al-Khamis Kanoo, Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation Founder and Director.

The Arts & Medicine Institute of Cleveland Clinic is the catalyst for integrating the arts in to the practice of medicine at Cleveland Clinic — from art and music therapies to performing arts medicine.

The Institute’s Executive Director, Iva Fattorini, M.D., explains her vision for the Institute as how her new programs are influencing Cleveland Clinic physicians and patients. She said “Our mission is to enhance the Cleveland Clinic experience of patients, visitors and employees through the arts, to practice and investigate the use of the arts in healing, and to build community around the arts, health and medicine.” The Arts & Medicine Institute creates and manages programs that: infuse the medical environment with the energy and vitality of the arts; contribute aesthetic beauty to Cleveland Clinic; expand and establish new programs that pair the arts with medical treatment and discovery; pursue research studies that support the relationship of art with medicine; and encourage arts and cultural activities at Cleveland Clinic.

Prisca Benoit, professor at the Superior Conservatoire of Paris and concert pianist, who performed for the patients at SKMC said, “I am always particularly moved from within when I play piano with doctors for patients. It is a completely different experience than in the concert hall that gives a new meaning and a broader dimension to our mission as musicians. Performing for patients is a truly rewarding experience.”

SEHA has announced today a successful implementation of Oracle Enterprises Resources Planning (ERP) in SEHA corporate office and across its Healthcare Facilities. SEHA is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. SEHA owns and operates 12 hospitals with 2,644 beds and 62 ambulatory/primary care clinics and most of SEHA facilities are Joint Commission accredited

This is a strategic step by SEHA in its efforts to work with the most modern and advanced technologies. The ERP System is expected to support new business development, increase productivity and competency and decrease costs. Such solutions enhance enterprise performance levels by enabling more efficient communication with suppliers, partners, customers and staff. This augments the value of the business. Implementation of the ERP system is part of an effort to reduce the Company’s operating costs while increasing the effectiveness of its operations and providing enterprise-wide perspective for managing its processes and introducing a paperless working environment.

Commenting on the new system, Mr. Saif Al Qubaisi, SEHA chairman said, “Implementing an ERP system is not an easy task to achieve, in fact it takes lots of planning, consulting, and timing. I’m proud we have achieved the ERP implementation across SEHA facilities within a limited period of time! We are harnessing technology to improve efficiency and productivity and building on Abu Dhabi’s e-government initiative.”

Mr. Carl Stanifer, CEO, SEHA, admired efforts of all those who participated in inaugurating this project, considering it another step within a series of projects and solutions SEHA aims to implement to create a paperless environment. The implementation of the Oracle E-Business suite (ERP) by SEHA has shown the commitment of the company to improve services delivery, streamline our internal processes, and provide real-time information for business decisions.

Mr. Robert Pickton, Chief Information Officer, SEHA , added “SEHA has successfully implemented core Oracle E-Business Suit in SEHA corporate office and in most of SEHA facilities in the short time period of eight months. This integrated system brings together entities that had previously used disparate business systems under a common umbrella, and we will use 2010 to add features and functionality to the E-Business Suite”

Mr. Basheer Al Muhairbi, Manager Information & Technology, SEHA added “This Project represents an important quality transformation and technological solution for the achievement and follow up of projects and activities development through different departments and divisions. The new system shall play an important role in the integrating approach for all company business, healthcare facilities and for operation follow up and performance enhance”.

SEHA chose Evolutionary Systems, (Evosys) as Oracle supplier, Evosys is a leading systems integrator for the healthcare and public sector industry, has enabled successful Go-Live of Oracle E-business Suite at SEHA and provided SEHA with a single integrated system for all critical areas of the business in the areas of Finance, Human Resources and Supply Chain.

On the occasion of the Go-Live, Umang Nahata, CEO, Evolutionary Systems (Evosys) said that “Evosys Vision for SEHA transformation was Reduce Variation through Standardization. It was a challenging exercise across SEHA and its facilities to successfully implement Oracle-ERP in a record time frame!

An ERP system is a business support system that maintains in a single database the data needed for a variety of business functions such as manufacturing, supply chain management, financials, projects, human resources and customer relationship management.

A variety of healthcare professionals from a range of disciplines within Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) recently attended a two-day Incident Management for Healthcare Professionals workshop held at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City from January 17th – 18th. The workshop — which was hosted by SEHA — was run in cooperation with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI); Given the high turnout during the first session, the course is being repeated from January 19th – 20th in order to make this opportunity available to as many SEHA staff as possible. Those attending the course include SEHA senior corporate staff as well as healthcare practitioners from Abu Dhabi healthcare facilities.

According to SEHA, these kinds of specialized trainings are vital to a healthcare organization’s capacity to set and measure internal benchmarks. “Effective incident management systems, when integrated with risk analysis and healthcare audit frameworks, allow us to maintain international best practices in our healthcare services,” says Dr. Mariam Al Mazrouei, Manager of Clinical Affairs for SEHA “We have long since realized that we must be proactive in this area, ensuring that patient safety remains the highest priority on our agenda.”

The workshop is specifically designed to develop healthcare professionals’ knowledge, interpretation and application of best practices in incident management. Taking a practical and team-based approach, the workshop is based on real-life case studies within the field of healthcare patient safety. This provides evidence-based guidance that can be subsequently applied to any area of today’s multi-faceted healthcare system. Ms Bernadette Kelly, Senior Clinical Affairs Specialist, is directly involved in organizing these kinds of internal programs throughout the SEHA organization, reiterated that one of the most important issues in healthcare today is ensuring the safety of patients. “We aim to ensure that all SEHA healthcare staff are aware of the concept of incident management so that it can be incorporated into existing quality programs to further improve patient safety.”

Mr. Luke Feeney, Information and Quality Consultant, (RCSI), added “What truly distinguishes healthcare facilities today is the approach they take to overcoming institutional challenges. SEHA, through the design and provision of these incident management workshops, is investing in programs that will benefit both patients and the public alike.”

A number of Healthcare Quality and Risk Management professionals with Abu Dhabi Health Service Company (SEHA) recently attended a weeklong “Root Cause Analysis” training workshop held at the Millennium Hotel, Abu Dhabi. The workshop, which was hosted by SEHA, was attended by Senior Corporate staff as well as the Directors and Managers of Quality and Clinical Risk from SEHA healthcare facilities.

The five-day workshop was structured using a “Train-the-Trainer” program and focused specifically on understanding Root Cause Analysis through a Human Factors Approach. The focus of the course involved identifying and understanding the underlying causes of patient safety incidents and determining the necessary corrective actions to minimize the likelihood of re-occurrence in the future. The course provides training based upon teamwork concepts developed and proven in the industry, including incident reports, case studies, simulation exercises and group discussions.

Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is a class of problem solving methods used to identify the root causes of problems or events. It is a discipline widely used in production-based failure analysis and safety programs, numerous engineering disciplines, and is widely credited with helping make airline travel one of the safest modes of transportation available. The program, as presented to the attendees from SEHA, is known as System Based RCA and has been highly successful in Continuous Quality Improvement Programs to reduce errors and enhance organizational effectiveness.

By electing for the weeklong structure, attendees not only developed their own expertise, but learned how to teach the course materials to a wide range of multidisciplinary healthcare staff through an ongoing training program across all SEHA healthcare facilities.

According to SEHA, root cause analysis training is incredibly important in making sure that immediate risks are removed and that incidents do not escalate to a more severe level. Dr. Mariam Al Mazrouei, Manager of Clinical Affairs for SEHA, says that one of SEHA’s core strategic objectives is to continually improve patient safety and build patient trust in the healthcare system. “We have long since realized that it is not enough to simply react to patient safety incidents,” comments Dr. Mazrouei. “We must be proactive, ensuring that lessons are learned and that incidents that put patients at risk are not repeated.”

Ms. Bernadette Kelly, Senior Clinical Affairs Specialist at SEHA, reiterated that one of the most important issues in healthcare today is ensuring the safety of patients. “We aim to adopt innovative approaches to patient safety and believe that learning from other industries–such as the aviation industry–can assist us in achieving our goal.”

This achievement further demonstrates SEHA’s commitment to quality-of-service standards. The ISO certification assures SEHA’s adherence to documented processes and procedures that ensure continued and ongoing improvements in delivering high quality healthcare services to the residents of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in particular and the region in general.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world’s largest developer and the most recognized name for International Standards. ISO 9001:2008 quality management system places customer satisfaction as the key component of the standard’s requirements.

To obtain this prestigious certification, SEHA headquarter underwent a one year process that included Gap Analysis; Documentation; Awareness and internal audit training; Internal audit management review which culminated in an Independent auditors from TuV Nord in October 2009. SEHA’s certification was issued by TuV Nord Middle East, an international leader in systems certification, and the testing, inspection, and certification of products and commodities.
