The new obstetric and neonatal departments and the outpatient clinic at Al Hussein Hospital in Amman have been renewed and launched by Minister of Abdul Latif Wreikat and US Ambassador Stuart E. Jones. completed the work in October 2011which coasted $1.8 million, according to a US embassy statement. The statement added “As part of the USAID-funded Health Systems Strengthening II (HSS II) Project, which carried out the renovations, USAID also introduced a prenatal information system, which provides Ministry of Health hospitals and outpatient clinics with an up-to-date database of expectant mothers’ medical histories, to help avoid unnecessary or repetitive tests and improve service providers’ readiness to deal with clinical cases, especially women with high-risk pregnancies”.

was first launched in September 2009 with an approximate coast of $73.5 million. The goal of the project was the quality and responsiveness of the public healthcare system in through cooperation between the Ministry of Health and the Royal Medical Services. Also by the end of 2012; new departments will be established such as obstetric, neonatal and emergency room in another 12 hospitals across the country.

Jordanian Association of Manufacturers and Medical Appliances (JAPM) in collaboration with Food and Drugs Association (JFDA) and with the support of USAID Economic Development Program (SABEQ) held this month the “3rd Middle East Bioequivalence ”.

The 3rd BE Conference invited representatives from authorities in charge of BE studies in the region to address these issues and constraints, aiming for better harmony amongst different regulations, and improving acceptance rate of BE studies in these countries, in line with international regulations and in a bid to simplify the procedures.

“This conference is a discussion platform on BE studies, and aims to bridge gaps between industry, CROs and regulators in the Middle East. The Conference further harmonizes different national regulations and raises them to international standards, minimize debates, increase acceptance level and avoid potential losses due to rejections of bio studies. It also saves efforts and resources of all stakeholders,” said Ms Hanan Sboul, Secretary General, JAPM.

Economic Development Program (SABEQ) supported the attendance of six private hospitals at the Moscow Fair for held in Moscow from 17 to 20 March 2010. The Jordanian booth at the Fair received a good number of visitors and the delegation met with a number of Russian companies interested in cooperating with Jordanian hospitals.

The Jordanian delegation ran a series of activities that aimed to inform interested public in medical tourism in Jordan. The Chairman of Private Hospitals Association (PHA) made a presentation on Jordan as a centre for medical tourism explaining the benefits and attractions that Jordan has to offer to Russian patients.

Another presentation was made by Mrs Zahira Haram from the Istishari Hospital, which highlighted modern medical facilities and capacities at the Hospital and the exceptional services it provides to local and foreign patients.

The Jordan Enterprise Development Corporation (JEDCO) extended an invitation to a number of Russian companies to visit Jordan. A Russian delegation was formed to be accompanied by Russian television companies who will enable Russian patients have a real feel of the country. The visit will also enable the Russian companies to contract Jordanian companies and start sending patients from the region for and recreation. The Russian delegation will be visiting Jordan in May this year.

The Economic Development Program (SABEQ) invited Private Hospital Association (PHA) members and medical to attend a focus group meeting at SABEQ premises, in a bid to protect patients’ rights in cases of a mal practice. Attending the session were PHA member hospitals and leading ’ representatives.

Promoting in necessitates responding to requirements of certain markets that demand medical insurance policies that guarantee the rights of patients.  As continues to lack the issuance of a mal-practice medical law such insurance requirements becomes highly important for certain markets, while others insist on them even when the law is enforced.

Valuable discussion between both parties yielded useful results. SABEQ Program was asked to provide technical assistance to create a new insurance product for hospitals and to ensure the correct application of international standards in Jordan, which would cater for the interests of bnoth hospitals and insurance companies.

The United States Agency for International Development () on Monday launched the second phase of the Systems Strengthening (HSS) project, which aims at developing and improving health services in the Kingdom.

The $58.5 million project, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, will address the country’s major health challenges such as reducing fertility rates; improving women’s health, family planning, reproductive health services and neonatal care; and facilitating access to and information by strengthening key elements of the health system that most directly affect performance in these areas.

According to USAID Mission Director in Jordan Jay Knott, previous USAID projects implemented in partnership with the Kingdom have led to the eradication of many infectious diseases, improved primary and reproductive health services, and trained healthcare providers to deliver high-quality services.

Through this five-year project, partners will continue the programmes they implemented during the first phase, which covered the renovation of six hospitals in different parts of the Kingdom, he added.

The HSS project, Knott noted, aims at supporting and addressing the Kingdom’s National Health Agenda and the ministry’s strategy through close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Royal Medical Services and other government and donor agencies.

“Jordan has made improving health services a top priority. We are proud to be a partner in this critical effort to improve the lives of average Jordanians across the country – especially mothers and children,” Knott said.

The second phase of the project will focus on renovating and equipping the emergency rooms, and obstetric and neonatal departments of selected hospitals around the Kingdom and training hospital staff.

It will also support improvements in the quality of services in hospitals and primary healthcare centres.

In addition, the project will work closely with local communities to improve community health by empowering and engaging communities to take responsibility in addressing their key health priorities.

Economic Development Program (SABEQ) announced in a press release that it recently supported the Private Hospital Association (PHA) by facilitating the attendance of seven private hospital officials from different hospitals in the International Medical Tourism Association’s 2nd annual World Medical Tourism and Global Congress that was held in Los Angeles (LA).

“As well as supporting the work of local professional associations, the USAID Jordan’s involvement in promoting medical tourism activities has been maintained in Jordan and abroad to leverage on Jordan’s good reputation,” the press statement said. It added: “Placing Jordan on the global medical tourism map has also prompted both PHA and USAID to seek international hospital accreditation, a step that was fully supported by the program.” As well as attending the LA congress itself, the PHA organised a booth where they welcomed visitors who wished to make contacts and enquire about facilities available in Jordan.
